Timing an opening to the last freeze
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, measured at Philadelphia International Airport over a 150 year record, put the median last spring freeze for the region at April 5. Most Bucks County pools do not open right around that date. They tend to open closer to Memorial Day in late May once the weather has settled further, but the April freeze date is still the backstop that determines when it is safe to start running equipment and filling the pool back up without risking a freeze on the lines. Opening earlier than that backstop risks a late cold snap catching a freshly started pump or heater before the lines have ever seen warm weather.
What an opening visit covers
The cover comes off first and is cleaned and stored, then the pump, filter and heater are reconnected and started up. Debris that collected over the winter is cleared out, the pool is brushed and vacuumed and the water is tested and balanced for the season ahead rather than left at whatever reading the cover trapped underneath it. Any fitting or line that needs a closer look after sitting idle all winter gets checked at the same time, before the pool is back in regular use.
Hard water makes the first balance matter more
Supply varies by town, but the Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority's 2025 report for its New Hope system lists hardness from 52.1 to 327 mg/L, in the authority's very hard range. A pool refilled or topped up with hard water at opening can start the season already carrying scale forming minerals, so the first balance of the year checks calcium hardness alongside chlorine and pH instead of assuming last year's levels still hold. A pool that sat mostly full over the winter needs a smaller top up than one that lost water to a slow leak or evaporation, which changes how much new fill water the opening balance has to account for.
A documented start to the season
Technicians are CPO certified and arrive in uniform in a wrapped vehicle, and the opening visit ends with an E-Report showing the water readings and before and after photos, so you have a clear record of the pool's condition on day one of the season, before the first swim and before any issue has had the chance to turn into a bigger one.
Bucks County Pool Opening: Frequently Asked Questions
Which Bucks County neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Bucks County, including Newtown, Yardley, Langhorne, Doylestown, Levittown and Warminster. The full list of areas is on our Bucks County page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Will the water be swimmable the same day?
Usually not immediately. Even a well closed pool needs the filtration running and the chemistry corrected before it is ready, and water that has sat all winter takes time to clear. Opening earlier in the season is what gives that process time to happen without cutting into swimming.
Do I need an opening if I never closed the pool properly?
If anything, yes. A pool that was left rather than closed tends to need more work at the start of the season, not less, because untreated standing water and equipment that was not drained are the two things that cause the most damage over winter. Mention it when you book so the right amount of time is set aside.
What should I do before the technician arrives?
Clear access to the pool and the equipment and move anything stored on or against the cover. Make sure the power supply to the pump and heater is on. If you know something went wrong last season or over the winter, mention it when booking rather than at the visit.
What happens to my winter cover?
It is removed carefully, cleaned and folded so it is preserved properly for next winter.
