Why winterizing matters here
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Memphis International Airport put the January average low at 34F, and the Memphis area sees about 43 nights a year at or below freezing, mostly from December through February. Water left standing in a pump, filter, heater or the plumbing lines can freeze and crack them, and that kind of damage is far more costly to fix than a proper closing is to perform in the fall.
What's included in a professional closing
- Testing and balancing the water for winter
- Lowering the water level
- Blowing out and plugging the lines
- Draining and protecting the pump, filter and heater
- Fitting the winter cover
Your closing visit ends with an E-Report showing your water readings and before and after photos, so you have a record of exactly how the pool was left for the winter.
When winter turns severe
The National Weather Service office in Memphis documented a major extreme winter weather event in February 2021 that affected the whole area, a reminder that a Memphis winter is not always a mild one. A pool that was properly closed down in the fall, with the lines cleared and the equipment protected, is in a far better position to get through a hard freeze than one that was left only partly winterized.
Closing pools across Bartlett, Germantown and East Memphis
Bartlett is a suburban community of about 57,786 residents in Shelby County, and like Germantown and the larger homes of East Memphis along Poplar Avenue, its pools tend to run from spring well into fall before the weather turns. NOAA's normals show the Memphis area averages about 4.4 days a year where the high temperature itself stays below freezing, not just the overnight low, which shows how quickly a cold spell can settle in once it arrives. A pool that is still open when that kind of cold hits, with water sitting in the pump, filter, heater and plumbing lines, is at real risk of cracked equipment. Closing ahead of that stretch, rather than waiting for the first hard freeze to show up on the forecast, is the difference between a routine fall service call and a pump, filter or heater that has to be replaced once it is uncovered again next spring.
Memphis Pool Closing: Frequently Asked Questions
Which Memphis neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Memphis, including East Memphis, Midtown, Cooper Young, Central Gardens, Chickasaw Gardens and Harbor Town. The full list of areas is on our Memphis page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Should the pool be drained completely for winter?
No, and doing so can cause real damage. Water in the pool is part of what holds the structure in place against ground pressure, and an empty pool can shift or lift. The water level is lowered rather than emptied, which is a different thing.
Does a safety cover need anything over winter?
It is worth clearing heavy accumulations of leaves, snow or standing water where you can do so safely from the edge, since sustained weight shortens a cover's life and stresses its anchors. Never walk on a cover to do it. If something looks wrong, it is better checked than guessed at.
What is a plumbing blow out?
It uses high volume air to clear water out of the underground lines, so there is nothing left in them to freeze and crack the pipes over winter.
Do you use antifreeze in the lines?
Yes, where it is needed. After the blow out, winter plugs go in and non toxic antifreeze is added to critical lines as extra protection against freezing.
