Pool Leak Detection: Skip the Trial & Error

Every year, pool owners try to take pool maintenance into their own hands only to end up with subpar results. It is easy enough to visit a pool supply store for water testing kits and chemicals but when it comes to water leaks, it is always a better idea to consult an expert at the first sign of trouble.

If your pool seems to be losing water, there are few a things to consider. Evaporation is common in outdoor pools, particularly during periods of high heats. It is common for water to burn off at a rate of 3-5 inches per week. Following a pool party or high traffic period where there are tons of bodies getting in and out of your pool, they are all carrying water out with them. With this is mind, it is important to determine if you are dealing with a leak or standard water loss.

In the event that you are having a hard time deciding whether you are managing standard water loss or dealing with a leak, a bucket test might be the key. A bucket test involves placing a bucket of pool water next to the basin, exposed to the same conditions. When dealing with the same conditions, the evaporation rate should be the same. If after a couple of days, the water level in your pool is far lower than the water level in the bucket, its a leak!

A big part of leak detection in pools is realizing whether it is your plumbing leaking, structures or equipment. Treating a tear in a pool liner is much different from treating corroded pipes or root damage. Pressure testing can help to assess plumbing lines and dye tests can help to determine if you are managing structural leaks. A pressure test uses a consistent stream of airflow applied to plumbing lines to create leak indicators like air bubbles or gurgling sounds. Dye tests use strategically placed coloured dyes to pinpoint structural leaks that, when the pool pump is switched off, create a vacuum.

You often won’t be able to go from bringing in leak detection services to repair in a period of 24 hours but the longer that you wait, the worse your leak becomes and the bigger the consequences it will have on your property. Water loss can cause soil to shift, putting undue strain on structures that can lead to breakage, as well as increased water bills, damage to lawns and the potential for flooded basements.

Expert leak detection services will not only locate the leak, they will isolate problem areas and help to organize repairs, all while providing excellent customer service at an accessible rate.
