Evaporation or a Leak
A pool loses some water to evaporation on its own, and North Houston's long run of hot, dry stretches between storms makes that harder to judge by eye. With July and August average highs near 94.5 F and 94.9 F at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, a pool can lose a noticeable amount of water to heat and sun in a week with no leak involved at all. A bucket test, comparing the pool's water loss against a bucket of water sitting on the steps over the same days, is the first step to separate ordinary evaporation from an actual leak before any equipment comes out.
Signs Worth Checking
- The water level drops faster than evaporation alone would explain
- The level keeps dropping even with the pump turned off
- You are adding water every few days instead of every week or two
- Wet spots or soft ground appear near the equipment pad or plumbing lines
Any one of these on its own is worth a look, and more than one together is a strong sign the loss is not just the Texas sun at work.
Pressure Testing and Dye Testing, Without Digging
Once a leak looks likely, pressure testing checks the plumbing lines for where pressure drops off, which narrows down which line is losing water before anything is opened up. Dye testing then targets specific fittings, lights, skimmers and returns, since a small stream of colored dye held near a suspect spot will visibly pull toward a leak if one is there. Both methods work from outside the pipe, so finding the leak does not mean trenching the yard or breaking open decking on a guess.
Weather Can Complicate the Picture
A heavy rain event can also push water into a pool from outside, which looks like a rising level rather than a leak, so technicians account for recent weather before drawing any conclusion. The IAH station's annual precipitation normal of about 51.8 inches means that between the long hot stretches that speed up evaporation and the occasional heavy rain that adds water from outside, a homeowner trying to read the pool's water level on their own can easily be misled in either direction, which is why a proper test looks at the plumbing itself rather than guessing from the level alone.
CPO certified technicians run the testing and leave an E-Report with the findings, and a quote is ready within 24 hours of your call.
North Houston Leak Detection: Frequently Asked Questions
Which North Houston neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across North Houston, including Klein, Champions, Jersey Village, Greenspoint, Aldine and Acres Homes. The full list of areas is on our North Houston page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Why does a small leak matter?
A pool holds a large volume of water, so a small leak adds up quickly. Beyond the water bill, a leak makes chemistry impossible to hold because treated water keeps escaping, it strains the pump and circulation system and water escaping into the ground can damage landscaping and, over time, the surrounding structure.
Can you test the plumbing lines as well as the pool shell?
Yes. Pressure testing checks the plumbing lines individually, which is how we tell a plumbing leak from a leak in the shell or liner. It is worth testing all the lines even when the leak seems obvious, because a second leak is easy to miss.
Should I keep the pool running while I wait for a leak test?
Keep the water level above the skimmer so the pump does not run dry, and note how much water you add and when. That record helps the test. If the level is dropping quickly, tell us when you book so the visit can be prioritized.
Can a hot tub or spa leak be detected the same way?
Yes. Spas and hot tubs have plumbing, jets and fittings that can leak just like a pool. The same testing approach applies, adapted to the spa's equipment.
