What a closing covers
The water is balanced for winter and the level lowered, the lines are blown out and plugged, the pump, filter and heater are drained and protected and the cover is fitted, so the pool is ready to sit through the cold months.
Frost and the occasional hard freeze
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Portland International Airport average about 31.7 nights a year at or below 32 F, with the median first fall frost around 19 November. Salem McNary Field averages about 49.4 such nights. Days that stay below freezing are rare, about 1.6 a year at the airport, but water left in the lines then can crack pipes and equipment.
Closing before the wet season
The same normals show December as the wettest month at the airport, at 5.77 inches. A closed, covered pool keeps winter rain and debris out, which makes the spring opening faster and cheaper.

Portland Pool Closing: Frequently Asked Questions
Which Portland neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Portland, including Lake Oswego, West Linn, Oregon City, Happy Valley, Gresham and Tualatin. The full list of areas is on our Portland page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Why does a pool need closing rather than just covering?
Because the damage winter causes is done by water left in the plumbing and equipment, not by the pool being uncovered. Water expands as it freezes, which is what cracks pipes, pumps, filters and heaters. Closing is mainly about getting water out of the places it should not be and leaving the remaining water treated.
When should a pool be closed?
Once the season is over and temperatures are consistently falling, but before the first hard freeze. Closing too early in warm water can encourage algae to establish under the cover, while leaving it too late risks the freeze damage the closing exists to prevent.
What does a professional closing include?
Balancing the water and adding winter treatment, lowering the water to the correct level, blowing out and plugging the lines and draining the pump, filter and heater. Accessories are removed and stored and the cover is fitted. The order matters, which is why it is done as one visit.
Should the pool be drained completely for winter?
No, and doing so can cause real damage. Water in the pool is part of what holds the structure in place against ground pressure, and an empty pool can shift or lift. The water level is lowered rather than emptied, which is a different thing.
