Keeping your pool running smoothly takes a lot more than a skimming every now and then.

    What maintenance includes

Each visit checks that the pump is circulating, the filter is clean and the heater is working, adjusts the chemistry for the conditions and notes any wear in your E-Report, so small problems are found before they stop the pool.

From wet spring to dry summer

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Portland International Airport show December as the wettest month and July the driest, at 0.51 inch. Spring rain dilutes the chemistry and brings in debris, while the dry, warm summer raises chlorine demand. Maintenance shifts with the weather rather than following one fixed routine.

    Soft and moderately hard sources

Portland Water Bureau's Bull Run supply is very soft, about 7 to 11 parts per million, while its Columbia South Shore wells run about 80 parts per million, and Tualatin Valley Water District reports its sources as soft as well. Because the water can change with the source, calcium, alkalinity and pH are tested on every visit rather than assumed.

Portland Pool Maintenance: Frequently Asked Questions

Which Portland neighborhoods do you cover?

We look after pools across Portland, including Lake Oswego, West Linn, Oregon City, Happy Valley, Gresham and Tualatin. The full list of areas is on our Portland page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.

How do I know whether my equipment needs attention?

The signs are usually gradual: the pool takes longer to clear than it used to, the pump sounds different, pressure readings drift from their normal range or the water is harder to keep balanced. Any of those is worth mentioning, because equipment problems are cheaper to address early.

How long should the pump run each day?

Long enough to turn over the pool's full volume, which depends on the size of the pool and the capacity of the pump rather than on a single rule. Running it too little is the most common cause of water that will not stay clear, while running it longer than needed mainly costs electricity. Your technician can tell you what is right for your setup.

Is maintenance still needed if the pool is not being used?

Yes. Standing, untreated water is more work to recover than water that has been kept balanced, and equipment that sits idle without being run or properly shut down is where problems develop quietly. A pool that is out of use either needs maintaining or needs closing properly.

Can maintenance be scheduled around the season?

Yes, and most customers do. Service is usually heavier through the swimming season and lighter outside it, and some equipment work is better done when the pool is not in use. It is worth discussing the pattern rather than assuming one schedule fits the whole year.
