What an opening covers
The cover comes off and is cleaned and stored, plugs are removed and the pump, filter and heater are reconnected and started. Winter debris is cleared, the pool is brushed and vacuumed and the water is tested and balanced so it is ready to swim.
When to open in Portland
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Portland International Airport put the median last spring frost around 13 March, and the driest, warmest months are July and August. Opening in late spring leaves time for the pool to be clear and balanced before the warm weeks arrive.
Balancing soft water at opening
Portland's Bull Run water is very soft, about 7 to 11 parts per million of hardness. Topping up after winter with water that soft lowers calcium in the pool, so opening is the right time to bring calcium hardness, alkalinity and pH into range.
Across the area
We open pools from Portland and Gresham to Lake Oswego, Oregon City, Canby and Salem. Call 971-343-8693 for a quote within 24 hours.
Portland Pool Opening: Frequently Asked Questions
Which Portland neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Portland, including Lake Oswego, West Linn, Oregon City, Happy Valley, Gresham and Tualatin. The full list of areas is on our Portland page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Will I get a report after the opening?
Yes. You receive a digital report showing your equipment is running, with photos and the initial water readings.
When should a pool be opened for the season?
Earlier than most people expect. Once daytime temperatures rise consistently, algae starts growing under the cover whether the pool is open or not, and a pool opened after that has begun is more work to clear than one opened before. Opening before you intend to swim also leaves time to deal with anything the winter has damaged.
What happens during a pool opening?
The cover comes off and is cleaned and stored, winter plugs are removed and the equipment is reassembled and restarted. The water level is brought up and the system is run while the water is tested and balanced. Any damage found from the winter is reported at that point rather than discovered mid season.
Will the water be swimmable the same day?
Usually not immediately. Even a well closed pool needs the filtration running and the chemistry corrected before it is ready, and water that has sat all winter takes time to clear. Opening earlier in the season is what gives that process time to happen without cutting into swimming.
