Five jobs done in one pass

Every cleaning follows the same order because each task sets up the next. Leaves and floating debris are skimmed off first. Brushing the walls, steps and waterline loosens film so it sinks to the floor, where the vacuum collects it. The skimmer and pump baskets are emptied and the filter is checked so water can circulate freely. Testing and balancing come at the end, once the pool is clean, so the readings describe the water your family will actually swim in. Nobody needs to be home while this happens. Leave the side gate open or share the access details and mention any dogs or alarms on the way to the equipment. The E-Report that follows each visit records what was done and the water chemistry.

North San Jose fill water changes with the blend

The tap that feeds your pool sets the starting point for every reading. Valley Water's retailer table assigns Alviso and the part of San Jose north of Trimble Road to San Jose Municipal Water. That utility's 2025 Water Quality Report describes a blend of Hetch Hetchy and Sunol Valley water from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, supplemented in 2025 by local deep wells. The two sources sit far apart. SFPUC treated water averages 60 ppm of hardness as calcium carbonate, about 3.5 grains per gallon. The North San Jose wells average 337 ppm, roughly 19.7 grains per gallon, based on 2023 data. Alkalinity splits the same way at 61 ppm against 260 ppm. A pool in Alviso or North San Jose can receive soft water in one season and much harder water in the next, so your technician measures it at your own pool every time.

    Berryessa, Alum Rock and Milpitas

Berryessa and the Alum Rock foothills are San Jose Water territory. The supply map in that company's 2025 Annual Water Quality Report shows most of the area on imported Valley Water surface water, which averaged 99 mg/L of hardness within a range of 77 to 146 mg/L. Around the Oakland Road and 13th Street corridor to the west, the map marks a mainly groundwater zone. That map dates from 2008. San Jose Water groundwater averages 288 mg/L.

Milpitas divides its supply by freeway. The City's 2024 Water Quality Report says SFPUC water serves the area south of Calaveras Boulevard and east of Interstate 680 plus the area north of Calaveras Boulevard and east of Interstate 880. Valley Water serves homes west of Interstate 880 and those south of Calaveras Boulevard west of Interstate 680. Hardness averaged 57 ppm on the SFPUC side and 110.5 ppm on the Valley Water side, so neighbors a few blocks apart may need different corrections.

A long dry stretch from June to September

Cleaning continues every month of the year, with the schedule adjusted to the weather. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals at the San Jose airport station show average highs of 80.8 F in July, 81.4 F in August and 80.7 F in September, so warm weather lasts well into autumn. The same normals record almost no summer rain: 0.00 inches in July, 0.05 in August and 0.07 in September. With nothing falling to dilute the pool, evaporation concentrates minerals while warm water burns through sanitizer. That is why most pools in regular use suit a weekly visit through those months. When rain returns in winter and swimming slows, a lighter schedule may fit. Your technician will recommend an interval based on how often the pool is used and how much debris lands in it.

Rinse water, backwash and algae without copper

What leaves your pool matters as much as what goes in. San Jose Environmental Services asks residents never to clean a filter in the street, gutter or storm drain. Cartridge filters should be rinsed onto a dirt area. Sand and diatomaceous earth filters are backwashed onto dirt as well. The same City page names copper, used as an algaecide and in pool plumbing, as a creek pollutant and suggests asking your pool service to solve persistent algae without copper algaecides. Steady sanitizer, regular brushing and good circulation are how routine cleaning keeps algae from settling in. Between visits, empty the skimmer basket if it fills and run the pump long enough to turn the water over each day. If the pool clouds up or smells strongly of chlorine, call your technician rather than waiting for the next visit.

San Jose Pool Cleaning: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the water in North San Jose and Alviso hard or soft for a pool?

It can be either, depending on the blend. San Jose Municipal Water's 2025 Water Quality Report describes Hetch Hetchy and Sunol Valley water averaging 60 ppm of hardness, about 3.5 grains per gallon, supplemented that year by local deep wells averaging 337 ppm, about 19.7 grains per gallon. Because some customers received a blend of the two, calcium is tested at your own pool or hot tub rather than assumed.

Why do pools on different sides of Milpitas need different chemistry?

Milpitas does not normally blend its two supplies. According to the City's 2024 Water Quality Report, SFPUC water averaged 57 ppm of hardness with a pH of about 7.7, while Valley Water supply averaged 110.5 ppm with a pH of about 8.87. Which one you receive depends on where your home sits relative to Calaveras Boulevard, Interstate 880 and Interstate 680.

Can I drain my pool or spa into the street in San Jose?

No. San Jose Environmental Services says not to drain pool or spa water to a street, gutter or storm drain and to discharge it to a sanitary sewer clean out instead. Filters should not be cleaned in the street either: cartridge filters are rinsed onto a dirt area and sand or diatomaceous earth filters are backwashed onto dirt. If you are on septic or have no clean out, contact your local wastewater treatment authority before draining.

Why is my pool still cloudy right after a cleaning?

Cleaning removes debris and corrects the chemistry, but the filter still needs time to clear fine particles from the water. Slight cloudiness usually settles as the pump runs. If it does not clear, or it gets worse, let your technician know so the filter and chemistry can be checked.

Can my hot tub be cleaned on the same visit?

Yes. If you have a hot tub as well as a pool, it can be serviced on the same visit and the same plan.
