San Jose Pool Maintenance
Puddle Pool Services maintains pools in San Jose and nearby Milpitas, Fremont, Newark, Livermore, Pleasanton and Tracy. Maintenance covers the pump, filter, heater, valves and plumbing together with the water chemistry that protects them. Every visit ends with an E-Report so you can see what was checked and what the readings were.

Maintenance looks past the water
Cleaning keeps the water and surfaces in shape. Maintenance also watches the machinery that keeps them that way. On each visit your technician checks filter pressure, clears the pump and skimmer baskets, looks over visible plumbing and valves and inspects the surface, covers and fittings for wear. Most equipment trouble arrives slowly: water that takes longer to clear after a party, a pump that starts to sound different, pressure that wanders from its usual band or chemistry that will not hold. Each of those is worth mentioning, because a tired seal or motor costs far less to address before it fails. Pump run time is set for your own pool as well. The pump needs to move the full volume through the filter each day, which depends on the size of the pool and the capacity of the pump rather than on one rule for everyone.
Corrosion, staining and copper plumbing
Balanced chemistry is the cheapest equipment protection there is. Water that drifts low in pH or alkalinity attacks metal parts, heaters and fittings, while water that runs high tends to leave scale. San Jose Environmental Services adds a local reason to stay in range: its pool guidance says to manage pH and hardness to limit corrosion of copper pipes, which can stain the pool. Fill water pushes in different directions across this territory. In North San Jose, Muni Water's SFPUC supply carries about 61 ppm of alkalinity while the area's wells carry about 260 ppm. In Milpitas, the City's 2024 report gives Valley Water supply an average pH of 8.87 against 7.7 for SFPUC supply. A pool topped up from either source needs correcting in its own direction, so readings are taken and adjusted on every visit.
Heat on the inland side of the territory
Summers differ sharply from one end of the service area to the other. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals count about 9.6 days a year at 90 F or more at the Newark station, the mildest in the area. The downtown Livermore station counts about 57.1 such days. The Livermore airport station, used here for Pleasanton and Ruby Hill, counts about 52.0. Tracy Carbona, southeast of Tracy, reaches about 80.2 days with a July average high of 93.2 F. Heat speeds evaporation and the loss of sanitizer, so a pool in Tracy or Livermore usually has more to keep up with in August than one in Newark or Fremont. Your schedule follows the weather in your own town instead of a single plan for the whole region.
Backwash recovery rules in Tracy
Tracy treats filter backwash as a water conservation issue. The standing Level 1 measures in the City's Water Shortage Contingency Plan, part of its 2025 Urban Water Management Plan, require every pool, hot tub and spa installed after May 1, 1993 to have a separation tank and water recovery system in the backwash system meeting a 90 percent recovery standard. Pools, hot tubs and spas installed after July 15, 2015 also need a non permeable floating cover or an equivalent giving 90 percent surface coverage. At Level 2, no customer may add water to or refill a pool, spa or hot tub unless it has that recovery system and the fill is for maintenance or a health and safety issue. If your Tracy pool has a recovery tank, point it out to your technician so it is included when the filter system is checked.
Service through the cooler months
Pools here are maintained all year rather than opened and closed by season. Freezes are rare near the Bay. NOAA's normals at the San Jose airport station average about 3.2 nights a year at or below 32 F, with a median freeze free period of 347 days. Inland the count rises: Tracy Carbona averages about 25.7 freezing nights and the Livermore airport station about 19.4. Winter is a practical time for equipment attention, since the pool sees less use and maintenance carries on at a lighter pace. A pool that nobody swims in for a few months still needs regular maintenance. Untreated standing water takes far more work to recover than water kept balanced and equipment that sits idle is where faults develop unnoticed.
San Jose Pool Maintenance: Frequently Asked Questions
Where does pool fill water come from in Berryessa and Alum Rock?
Valley Water's retailer table places Berryessa and the Alum Rock foothills with San Jose Water. That company's 2025 Annual Water Quality Report maps most of the area on imported Valley Water surface water, which averaged 99 mg/L of hardness, with a mainly groundwater area to the west around the Oakland Road and 13th Street corridor on a map dated 2008. San Jose Water groundwater averages 288 mg/L, so it is worth knowing which source reaches your street.
Why is Livermore Municipal Water harder in winter?
Livermore has two water providers. Livermore Municipal Water, which serves the northern and eastern parts of the city, says its water typically runs 213 to 287 ppm of hardness, moderately hard to very hard. It rises in winter and during droughts because more groundwater is in the supply then, so a hot tub refilled in winter may need more attention to calcium.
Why do pools on different sides of Milpitas need different chemistry?
Milpitas does not normally blend its two supplies. According to the City's 2024 Water Quality Report, SFPUC water averaged 57 ppm of hardness with a pH of about 7.7, while Valley Water supply averaged 110.5 ppm with a pH of about 8.87. Which one you receive depends on where your home sits relative to Calaveras Boulevard, Interstate 880 and Interstate 680.
What does a maintenance visit check besides the water?
The filter and its pressure, the pump and its baskets, visible plumbing and valves plus the condition of the liner or surface, covers and fittings. The point is to spot wear early, while it is still a small fix.
Can maintenance include my hot tub as well?
Yes. Hot tubs need the same attention to chemistry, filters and equipment as a pool, often more frequently because of the small volume and high temperature, so it makes sense to look after both on the same plan.
