Pool Inspections in Calgary: What to Expect
Swimming pools are major selling features for house hunters in Calgary. As much as you might want to get carried away daydreaming about summer days and pool parties, it’s important to make sure pools are in good condition first. Whether you are purchasing a home with a pool, selling one or are noticing that water systems are acting up, there’s never a bad time to book your Calgary pool inspection service with Puddle.
Everyone knows that it’s a good idea to consult a home inspector before finalizing the sale of a house, but swimming pools are often overlooked. Without technical training and experience, it’s easy to overlook small issues in pools that will get worse over time. Puddle pool inspectors will point out existing problems, as well as signs of weakening that will cause problems later on.
Level 1 Swimming Pool Inspections: What is Included?
Every pool and spa depends on several complex systems to stay in good condition. Certain types of pool inspections will focus on the surface and structures of swimming pools, but the primary focus of these will often include construction, permitting or insurance. These inspections are useful, but they won’t tell you if a swimming pool is functional and in good condition.
Visual Inspections: Swimming pools are made up of many parts, each of which will start to show signs of wear over time. After years of experience in the industry, Puddle technicians know how to spot signs of existing damage and the signs of issues to come. Visual inspections include an overview of tiles and surfaces, looking for signs of damage. Special attention is also given to the condition of vinyl liners.
Internal Water Systems: Without functional pool equipment, it won’t take long for water to start going cloudy or green. Water quality depends on chemical treatments being able to circulate. Replacing a pool pump, motor or plumbing lines is very expensive. Puddle technicians test components, systems and even heaters to ensure that everything is working as it should be.
Pool Equipment, Safety Features & Accessories: A pool inspection should be thorough and include the surrounding areas. A damaged pool deck is a serious threat to the condition of swim spaces, but so is rust, corrosion or the risk of accessories falling into basins. If a safety ladder or railing is coming loose from its fixtures, there’s a chance it’ll fall into pools and cause surface damage or liner tears. Puddle technicians will review these safety features as well as pool accessories like slides and diving boards.
Swimming Pool Inspections: Assessing the Condition of Pools and Spas
Even with a regular pool maintenance routine, it’s possible that serious issues are lurking just out of sight. Years of experience and technical training make it possible for Puddle pool inspectors to spot obvious and subtle issues that are plaguing your pool. A standard home inspection might overlook swimming pools, but nothing gets by our Puddle pool inspectors.
A multi-step inspection provides peace of mind to current pool owners and those who are looking to purchase a home with a pool or hot tub. It’s important to note that these inspections don’t include a detailed report and can’t be used for formal permitting.
Calgary Pool Inspections: Frequently Asked Questions
What are the pool fence rules in Calgary?
The City of Calgary requires a permit for a pool or hot tub able to hold water deeper than 0.6 m. Private swimming pools need a fence at least 1.8 m above grade, with gates the same height that are self closing, self latching and lockable and a latch at least 1.5 m above grade on the inside. Hot tubs with a locking ASTM F1346 cover need no fence. The Land Use Bylaw sets a 1.2 m setback from side and rear property lines, so confirm with the City before building.
How often does hail hit Calgary pools?
Environment and Climate Change Canada 1981 to 2010 normals for Calgary International Airport record about 3.8 days with hail a year, mostly in June and July (1.2 and 1.3 days). There are about 25 thunderstorm days a year peaking in July. Hail and storms can leave debris in pools and water features and damage covers. A cleaning and inspection visit after a storm helps.
How long is the freeze season in Calgary?
ECCC 1981 to 2010 normals give an average last spring frost around May 21 and first fall frost around September 16, a frost free period of about 117 days. Lows average below 0 C from October through April at the airport, with about 194 days a year at or below 0 C. Hot tubs and water features need freeze protection for most of the year.
What affects the cost of a pool inspection?
The size and type of pool, whether a spa or hot tub is included and the equipment on site all affect the price. Ask for a quote for your property and we will tell you exactly what is included. (Where the local franchise publishes inspection pricing, the local version of this answer quotes it exactly.)
Will an inspection find leaks?
An inspection includes checks for signs of leaks, such as water loss, wet areas and equipment issues. If a leak is suspected, dedicated leak detection testing confirms it and pinpoints the source.
