How often should a pool be professionally cleaned?
Most pools in regular use are serviced weekly through the swimming season, because skimming, brushing and chemical balance all drift within days rather than weeks. Pools that are used less, or that are covered for part of the year, are often fine on a fortnightly visit. The right interval depends on how much the pool is used, how much tree cover sits above it and the local climate, so it is worth asking for a recommendation for your own pool.
What is included in a pool cleaning visit?
A standard visit covers the water, the surfaces and the equipment: skimming debris from the surface, brushing walls and steps, vacuuming the floor, emptying skimmer and pump baskets, checking the filter and testing and balancing the water chemistry. The point of doing all of it on one visit is that these jobs undo each other if they are done separately.
Do I need to be home during the service?
No. As long as the technician can reach the pool and the equipment, service is usually carried out while nobody is home, which is how most regular customers prefer it. You will need to arrange access to gates or side entrances in advance, and let us know about pets, alarms or anything else on the route to the pool.
Can cleaning fix a green pool, or is that a different job?
A green pool is an algae bloom, and clearing one is recovery work rather than routine cleaning. It usually needs shock treatment, extended filtration and repeat visits before normal service resumes, because killing algae and removing it from the water are two separate stages. Once the pool is clear, regular cleaning is what stops it happening again.
What should I do between professional visits?
Very little, which is the point of a service, but two habits help: empty the skimmer basket if it fills between visits, and run the pump long enough each day to turn the water over. If you notice the water going cloudy, losing its clarity or smelling strongly of chlorine, tell your technician rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.
