How to Clean Your Swimming Pool: Excellent Results With a Multi-Step Approach

Anyone can flip the switch on a robotic pool cleaner and hope for the best but this will often end up with pockets of debris and bacteria, as well as preventing water balancing. If you are starting to notice cloudy water shocking the pool is an obvious next step but this is only a temporary solution if you don’t figure out the root cause. In order to get the best results for a swim space, it is important to consider all of the parts and systems that keep your water flowing.

Water Chemistry: Balancing pool chemicals is a key part of pool care but it is also a complex process. Anyone can pop out to a supply store to collect testing kits and chemicals but putting them to use can be tricky. Test strips will often hone in on issues with chlorine levels but overlook the other aspects of water chemistry. In order to create a sanitary space it is important to balance sanitizers, as well as pH levels, total alkalinity and calcium. Balanced water not only creates a safe space for swimmers, it helps to prevent algae growth and limits the risk of other contaminants.

Removing Debris: Even with a cover on, unwanted items have a habit of finding their way inside pool systems. Lighter items will float along surfaces and will get caught up in skimmer baskets or, if not removed, will rot and break apart into smaller pieces, becoming even more difficult to remove. Heavier items will sink to the bottom of the pool and sit against liners, which will lead to permanent staining over time. A pool vacuum can remove items from wide, flat areas but they don’t do much for corners or the hard angles around stairs. In order to reach these areas you will need a manual vacuum that is easy to manoeuvre.

Filtration Systems: The pool filter is a key component of any swim space but they are often overlooked. The aim of a pool filter is to trap and hold small items while letting filtered water circulate back through. Over time these small bits and pieces will create blockages and make it more difficult for water to pass through. This means using more energy, driving up daily running costs and putting unnecessary strain on water systems. Any added wear and tear will lead to the need for premature repairs and replacements. A cartridge filter should be removed, cleaned and reinstalled every 3-4 months and sand filters should be emptied and refilled with clean sand every 3-5 years.
