How often does a hot tub need servicing?
Hot tubs need attention more often than pools relative to their size, because the water is hot, the volume is small and bather load is concentrated. Water chemistry is typically checked weekly, and the water itself is drained and refilled periodically rather than treated indefinitely. How often depends on how heavily the tub is used.
Why does hot tub water need changing at all?
Dissolved solids build up in the water over time and cannot be filtered out. Once they accumulate, the water becomes harder to balance, sanitiser works less well and the tub can start to foam or smell even when the chemistry readings look reasonable. Draining and refilling resets that, which is why it is part of maintenance rather than a sign something went wrong.
What causes cloudy or foamy hot tub water?
Usually a combination of body oils, cosmetics and detergent residue combined with a filter that needs cleaning, and often a sanitiser level that has dropped. Because the water is warm and the volume is small, these show up quickly. It is normally a maintenance issue rather than a fault with the tub.
Does a hot tub still need servicing in winter?
Yes, and often more attention rather than less, because a tub in use through cold weather is working harder and the area around it needs to stay safe to reach. If a tub is being left unused through winter it should either be maintained or properly closed down, since water left standing and untreated is the situation that causes damage.
Can you service a hot tub that has been left unused?
Yes. A tub that has been standing usually needs the water drained, the shell and jets cleaned, the filters cleaned or replaced and the system checked before it is refilled and rebalanced. It is worth having the equipment inspected at the same time, because pumps and heaters are where problems from a long standing period tend to show up first.
