Maintaining a Hot Tub: The Importance of a Multi-Step Approach 

Maintaining a sanitary swim space isn’t just about keeping water clean. Adding and balancing hot tub chemicals is very important but without functional internal systems it won’t stay clean for long. After years of industry experience Puddle technicians have found the secret to successful, efficient and long-lasting cleanings: a multi-step approach. 

By focusing in on one area of the cleaning process there’s a possibility that something might be overlooked or forgotten. Instead Puddle crews apply a step-by-step approach that improves visuals and cleans systems inside and out. 

Ditching Debris: Even with a spa cover on bits and pieces of debris have a way of making their way underneath. This means leaves, insects, dust and pollen floating along water surfaces, as well as heavier items and dirt sunken down to the bottom of the tub or sitting in seats. When this is the case you can’t just flip the switch on a robotic cleaner. Navigating complicated structures means manual tools that suck up debris while returning filtered water back into basins. 

Balancing Water Chemistry: A hot tub’s water is hot, damp and covered and this is the perfect environment for germs. Without regular chemical applications it won’t take long for contaminants to take over. When applied correctly chemical treatments will last for approximately two weeks with average use. Test strips will point out chemical imbalances but they don’t tell you how to fix the issue. Having an expert test your water means balancing chlorine levels, ph levels, total alkalinity and calcium. 

Filter & Equipment Checks: Keeping your hot tub cleaner means catering to internal systems as well as exterior surfaces. This means flushing lines, testing systems and heaters, as well as cleaning out filters regularly. Puddle technicians will inspect filters with every service. Clogged filters force pumps to work hard to circulate spa water through the lines. Regular filter cleaning keeps systems running smoothly and prevents the need for premature repairs or replacements. 

Deep Cleans: Even with regular hot tub services it is a good idea to schedule deep cleans or a system refresh at least once a year. This process involves applying a specially developed combination of chemicals that run through internal lines loosening any dirt or buildup that is sitting inside and pulling it out into the basin. Hot tub water is then drained and shells, jets and headrests are scrubbed clean. Water can then be refilled with a garden hose and technicians will then come back for a final water balancing. 

Ask your technician about an optional Full Shampoo service. This extra step involves speciality cleansers and soft bristle brushes to scrub the exterior surfaces of shells and the hot tub cover for a top to bottom clean.
