Hot Tub Care: What to Do & When 

The secret to keeping a hot tub in great shape is consistent and regular cleanings but this is easier said than done. With an already busy schedule, it’s common for hot tub care to be pushed to the back burner. The trouble is that this can have serious consequences for the overall condition of your spa. It’s easy to get caught up focusing on surfaces and obvious staining but the secret to a proper and thorough cleaning is a multi-step approach that goes beneath the surface. 

A routine spa cleaning should consist of water balancing and chemical treatments, scrubbing, and checking internal water systems that focus on filtration and circulation. By breaking the process down into multiple steps it’s possible to improve the look of your hot tub as well as prolong its lifespan and reduce energy consumption. 

Water Treatments: Balancing spa water isn’t as simple as throwing in a handful of hot tub chemicals now and then. Damp, dark, warm and covered environments are the ideal places for bacteria to thrive. 

Without routine cleaning programs, it doesn’t take long for spas to be overrun with algae, mold and bacteria. Anyone can grab a box of test strips but putting them to use is complex. More than just chlorine levels proper water balance is based on sanitizers, calcium, pH and alkalinity levels. 

Surface Cleaning: Every individual who steps foot into your spa leaves something behind. This can be natural oils, lotions, hair products, makeup, sunscreen and more. These will impact water conditions as well as leave residue behind on spa walls near the water line. 

When scrubbing down spas it’s important not to use harsh chemical cleaners like bleach, as they can degrade protective coatings and waterproofing. Puddle technicians use specialty cleansers and soft-bristle brushes to remove residue and staining safely. 

Debris Removal: Unlike swimming pools that have large, flat surfaces, hot tubs are complicated structures with lots of interesting angles. The shape of a spa shell makes using robotic pool vacuums just about impossible. Instead, it’s important to work with manual vacuums that can navigate tight and hard-to-reach spaces. Puddle technicians bring specialty brushes, manual vacuums and skimmers to fully remove unwanted items from water surfaces, seats and flooring. 

Filtration & Circulation Systems: Sitting water is dirty water and that’s bad news for everyone involved. Hot tub filters are designed to help keep water clean by trapping and holding small bits and pieces of debris while letting filtered water pass through. 

When filters aren’t cleaned it will put strain on other important pool equipment. If filters are full of debris it will become harder for water to circulate through and that means pumps and motors have to work harder. Deep Cleans: Even with a regular cleaning program in place it’s important to schedule a deep cleaning as part of your annual maintenance routine. This process refreshes your system from the inside out, removing buildup from inside lines. It all starts with a combination of specialty chemicals designed to run through systems loosening debris and pulling it out into the basin.

Puddle technicians will then drain the water out and perform heavy scrubbing of walls, flooring, shells, jets and rests. Once scrubbed clean it’s time to refill the hot tub. This can be done with a simple garden hose or by water delivery in remote areas. Once this is finished a Puddle technician will come back to treat and test your water for a final and complete balancing.

There isn’t much point in deep cleaning a spa only to throw a dirty spa cover back on and reintroduce contaminants to water systems. During a full shampoo service external shells, hot tub covers and outer areas are scrubbed with soft bristle brushes and specialty cleansers that remove dirt, grime and debris without causing damage.
