Addressing Common McKinney Pool Opening Challenges

Even with the best winterization, issues can arise when it's time to open your pool. Puddle Pool Services specializes in diagnosing and resolving these challenges promptly.

Problem: Green or Murky Water After Cover Removal

If your pool water resembles a swamp after winter, it’s a sign of significant algae growth. This is a common local pain point, especially if winter chemicals weren't properly maintained or the cover allowed light penetration.

Solution: Our initial shock treatment is specifically designed to tackle this. We apply a potent dose of sanitizers to kill algae and bacteria, followed by thorough filtration and balancing. If you're near Towne Lake Park and your pool looks more like a pond, our team has the expertise to bring it back to life.

Problem: Equipment Not Functioning Properly After Winter

Sometimes, pumps refuse to prime, filters leak, or heaters won't ignite after months of inactivity. These issues can be frustrating and costly if not addressed correctly.

Solution: Our detailed equipment inspection during system startup is key. We check all connections, electrical components, and internal workings. If we detect a problem, we can often perform minor repairs on-site or provide clear recommendations for more extensive service, getting your system running efficiently without delay.

McKinney Pool Opening: Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is McKinney water for pools?

The City of McKinney buys all its treated water from the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD). NTMWD data for its Wylie plants show finished water hardness of 94.8 to 136 mg/L as CaCO3 in February 2026 and 116 to 128 mg/L in August 2026, roughly 5.5 to 8 grains per gallon. NTMWD calls its water moderately hard. Hardness rises and falls with lake conditions, so calcium levels are worth testing through the year.

Can I fill or drain my pool during a drought in McKinney?

Under the 2024 NTMWD Water Resource and Emergency Management Plan, Stage 3 prohibits filling, draining or refilling existing pools, wading pools and hot tubs except for structural integrity, proper operation and maintenance or public safety. Topping off for normal use and evaporation is still allowed at Stage 3, while Stage 1 only encourages draining and refilling less often. Check which stage the City has in effect before draining.

What does McKinney require of community pools before and after the season?

McKinney City Code Chapter 94 requires a public pool or spa to keep its water clear enough to see the main drain from outside the pool even when it is not operating (Sec. 94-5). Public pools, spas and interactive water features also need a city pre operational inspection each year before they open for the season (Sec. 94-6). HOA and apartment pool managers should confirm current requirements with the City before closing or reopening.

What happens to my winter cover?

It is removed carefully, cleaned and folded so it is preserved properly for next winter.

Why does the water look green or cloudy when the cover comes off?

Water that has sat under a cover all winter often has some algae and debris in it, even after a good closing. The opening shock and balancing start clearing it, and the filtration finishes the job over the following days.
