How hard is Calgary water for hot tubs and pools?
The City of Calgary reports hardness of 141 to 200 mg/L as CaCO3 from the Bearspaw plant (Bow River, mainly north Calgary) and 181 to 274 mg/L from the Glenmore plant (Elbow River, mainly south Calgary). The city says hardness is lowest during spring snowmelt and highest December to February. Hot tubs refilled in winter start with the hardest water of the year.
What are the pool fence rules in Calgary?
The City of Calgary requires a permit for a pool or hot tub able to hold water deeper than 0.6 m. Private swimming pools need a fence at least 1.8 m above grade, with gates the same height that are self closing, self latching and lockable and a latch at least 1.5 m above grade on the inside. Hot tubs with a locking ASTM F1346 cover need no fence. The Land Use Bylaw sets a 1.2 m setback from side and rear property lines, so confirm with the City before building.
Where should I drain my hot tub or pool in Calgary?
The City of Calgary says to drain hot tubs and pools into the wastewater drain in the basement, not into the storm drain, street or alley. Anyone using a pump or a siphon over 1.5 inches inside diameter to drain more than 3,000 L to the wastewater system must notify the city (form E2226). Chlorine must first be brought within Wastewater Bylaw limits, so confirm with the City before draining.
