Hot Tub Care 101: How to Keep Water Systems Clean 

There is a big difference between a hot tub and a bath tub. Sure, they might look similar and act in a similar way but you can’t just drain and refill the hot tub with every use. This means spa water needs to be kept clean with regular chemical applications, debris removal, filter changes and scrubbing. Using the wrong tools or harsh chemicals can cause structural damage and strip away protective coatings. Instead of dealing with the aftermath of a DIY disaster, opt for expert care instead. 

Balance Water Chemistry: Every pool supply store has tons of chemical test kits at the ready but these aren’t always enough to balance water chemistry. Test strips will usually focus on chlorine levels but there’s a lot more to water balancing than just that. Puddle technicians test the water in a tub measuring sanitizer levels, along with pH levels, total alkalinity and calcium. 

Remove Debris: A properly fitted hot tub cover is designed to help keep unwanted items out. These covers are very beneficial but it’s impossible to keep every single bit of debris out of water. Unlike a swimming pool you can’t just toss in a robotic vacuum and watch it suck up unwanted items. Bulky vacuums can’t navigate complex curves and seats. That is why Puddle technicians use specialty manual vacuums to suck up debris from seats. 

Scrub Surfaces: Over time residue will start to build up on walls near the water line. This will often look white and scummy. More than just looking awful this residue harbours harmful bacteria and makes surfaces slippery. Careful scrubbing with a soft bristle brush wipes away residue without causing surface damage. Clean Your Filters: The best way to keep spa water clean is with a multi-layered approach and that includes cleaning hot tub filters. A filter is designed to trap and hold unwanted items. Over time they can become full and this makes it harder for water to circulate through. This puts strain on important internal components like pumps and motors. Routine cleaning helps to prolong the lifespan of these important parts and reduces the need for expensive repairs or premature replacements. 

Deep Cleans: Even if you clean a hot tub or spa daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or as needed, water systems still need a deep clean. A deep clean, or Hot Tub Refresh as we call it, provides a full-service cleaning of internal water systems as well as surfaces. The process involves applying a combination of specialty chemicals that run through systems loosening dirt, debris and buildup that has collected in internal lines. All of this debris is deposited into the tub basin which can then be drained. All sides, surfaces, seats, jets and headrests are then scrubbed clean. From there it’s important to refill spas with fresh water. This is simple and can be done using a garden hose and Puddle technicians will come back for a final water balancing.
