Why Southlake pools open early in the year
North Texas springs arrive fast, and that sets the timing. DFW International Airport, just southeast of Southlake, is the closest official weather station, and its NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals put the median last spring freeze on March 8. February still averages 6.2 freezing nights there, but the normals show none at all from April through September. Once daytime temperatures climb and stay up, algae begins growing under the cover whether or not the pool is open, and a pool opened after that point takes more work to clear. Booking soon after the freeze risk fades gives the filtration and balancing time to work before anyone swims. Keep in mind that a median is a midpoint, so a later cold night is still possible in some years.
The opening visit from cover to first readings
Each opening follows the same sequence, and each step sets up the next one:
- The cover is taken off carefully, cleaned and folded so it keeps well for next winter.
- Winter plugs come out and the pump, filter and heater are reassembled and started.
- The water level is raised to where the skimmers and equipment need it.
- The system runs while the water is tested, shocked and balanced.
- Anything the winter damaged is noted and reported to you at the visit.
Water that sat under a cover for months often holds some algae and debris even after a careful closing. The shock and balancing begin clearing it and the filtration finishes the work over the following days, so the pool is usually not ready to swim the moment the cover comes off.
Balancing with Southlake tap water
The water you add at opening shapes the first readings. Southlake buys its drinking water from the City of Fort Worth, which draws raw water through the Tarrant Regional Water District from reservoirs including Lake Worth, Eagle Mountain Lake, Cedar Creek and Richland Chambers. The city's Water Quality Report for 2025 data lists total hardness of 108 to 150 ppm as calcium carbonate, or 6 to 9 grains per gallon, with total alkalinity of 99.7 to 124 ppm and pH from 7.8 to 8.5. That is moderately hard to hard water that arrives on the alkaline side. Because of it, the opening balance starts from what the test shows after the top up rather than from assumptions, and the first readings in your report give a baseline for the rest of the season.
Topping up under the drought plan
Most pools need water added at opening because the level was lowered for winter. Southlake's drought contingency plan, in City Code Sec. 19-60, sets out how that changes by stage. Stage 1 discourages filling, draining or refilling pools and hot tubs. Stage 2 prohibits it except to maintain water levels for structural integrity, proper operation and maintenance or public safety, and it encourages pool covers. Stage 3 adds a ban on permits for new pools and spas, although pools already permitted may still be filled. Southlake's plan follows the regional program of the Tarrant Regional Water District and Fort Worth, so measures announced there pass through to the city. Check which stage applies before a large refill.
Getting ready for your opening
A little preparation keeps the visit efficient. Clear a path to the pool and the equipment pad and move anything stored on or against the cover. Make sure the power to the pump and heater is switched on. If something went wrong last season or over the winter, mention it when you book. That matters here because hard freezes do reach North Texas: the National Weather Service recorded 139 consecutive hours below freezing at DFW from February 13 to 19, 2021. If your pool was left full and idle rather than properly closed, it still needs an opening and often more work than usual, since untreated standing water and undrained equipment cause the most winter damage.
Southlake Pool Opening: Frequently Asked Questions
Which Southlake neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Southlake, including Town Square, Carroll & North Carroll, Timarron, Southlake Boulevard Corridor, Dove Road & Westridge and West Dove. The full list of areas is on our Southlake page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Will the water be swimmable the same day?
Usually not immediately. Even a well closed pool needs the filtration running and the chemistry corrected before it is ready, and water that has sat all winter takes time to clear. Opening earlier in the season is what gives that process time to happen without cutting into swimming.
Do I need an opening if I never closed the pool properly?
If anything, yes. A pool that was left rather than closed tends to need more work at the start of the season, not less, because untreated standing water and equipment that was not drained are the two things that cause the most damage over winter. Mention it when you book so the right amount of time is set aside.
What should I do before the technician arrives?
Clear access to the pool and the equipment and move anything stored on or against the cover. Make sure the power supply to the pump and heater is on. If you know something went wrong last season or over the winter, mention it when booking rather than at the visit.
What happens to my winter cover?
It is removed carefully, cleaned and folded so it is preserved properly for next winter.
Puddle Pools is such a great company! Our previous pool boy (my husband) got fired from pool duty because it was turning into a green swamp! Chris Reeves came out same day to get an initial consultation and get us started. Noah, Ian, and Chris came out every day for a week to turn our swamp into a blue lagoon that we could enjoy that weekend! Every clean is documented with every chemical used (chemicals included in service!), and pictures so you can see their results. So happy to have Ian and Noah as reliable pool boys to keep our pool ready for my kiddos to use this summer! 10/10 ⭐️
After 25 years of tending to pool duties on my own because no one else could possibly do it better than me, I turned it ALL over to Chris Reeves with Puddle Pools. I have a high maintenance pool under a canopy of trees. The water is usually dark green for most of April and May. Last week inside of 3 days, it was crystal clear and ready to use. I’ve found that they are also able to handle any pool need from water treatment to any type of pool equipment. They are reliable, trustworthy and provide a real value for the money. I highly recommend them. They’re making my life so much easier.
Honest people that will take care of you. Chris came out to give me a quote on pool services. Chris was very honest telling me what options made sense for my situation and didn’t pressure me to make a decision. I ended up hiring Puddle Pools to detect a suspected leak I had. They identified a leaky valve and quickly showed up to fix that valve. Highly recommend using Puddle Pools. Ask for Chris. Good Dude.
I would not go to anyone else to have my pool cleaned. Customer service is second to none and they take pride in doing the highest quality of work. They are reliable and efficient, I will be a customer for life.
