Does a Southlake pool need closing?
Winters here are short and mild compared with the north, and many local pools stay filled all year. Swimming is still seasonal, though, and freezes are real. NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals for DFW Airport, the nearest official station, count about 29 nights a year at or below 32 F: 10.6 in January, 8.1 in December and 6.2 in February. Water expands as it freezes, which is what cracks pipes, pumps, filters and heaters. A pool that will sit unused for the winter needs either regular maintenance or a proper closing, because idle equipment holding water is where the damage starts. If you plan to leave the pool alone until spring, a closing is the safer choice.
Timing a closing around the November freeze
The median first fall freeze at DFW Airport falls on November 24, so the window for most Southlake closings is after the swim season ends and before that date. Close too early, while the water is still warm, and algae can take hold under the cover. Leave it too late and you risk the very freeze damage the closing is meant to prevent. Hard freezes can also run long here: the National Weather Service recorded 139 consecutive hours below freezing at DFW from February 13 to 19, 2021. A median is a midpoint, so an earlier freeze is possible in some years. Book once you are done swimming and temperatures are falling steadily.
What the closing visit covers
A closing is about getting water out of the places it should not be and leaving the rest of it treated. The order matters, which is why it is done as one visit:
- The water is balanced and winter treatment is added.
- The level is lowered to the correct point for winter.
- High volume air blows water out of the underground lines.
- Winter plugs go in and non toxic antifreeze is added to critical lines.
- The pump, filter and heater are drained.
- Accessories are removed and stored and the cover is fitted and secured.
Your E-Report shows time stamped photos of the lines being winterized and the cover going on.
Lowering the water within Southlake's rules
Water that leaves the pool at closing has to meet the city's stormwater code. Sec. 9.5-503 allows dechlorinated pool water into the storm sewer, and Sec. 9.5-504 prohibits pool water with more than 0.1 ppm chlorine, muriatic acid or other pool chemicals, water with a pH above 8 or below 6 and filter backwash that has not first passed through a vegetated area. The city's stormwater page advises stopping chlorine several days ahead, testing, draining slowly to the street or a storm drain and never onto a neighbor's property. October is one of the two wettest months at DFW, averaging 4.37 inches, and the city asks that you not drain during or just before rain. The pool is never emptied, since the water helps hold the structure in place against ground pressure.
Covers through the winter months
Your cover choice can matter beyond keeping leaves out. Southlake adopted the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code with a local amendment: at one and two family homes and townhouses, a pool with a powered safety cover meeting ASTM F1346 is exempt from barrier Sections 305.2 to 305.7. A spa or hot tub with a lockable ASTM F1346 cover is treated the same way. Confirm what applies to your property with the city before relying on a cover in place of a fence. Through the winter, clear heavy leaves or standing water from the cover where you can do it safely from the edge, since sustained weight shortens its life and strains the anchors. Never walk on a cover to do it.
Southlake Pool Closing: Frequently Asked Questions
Which Southlake neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Southlake, including Town Square, Carroll & North Carroll, Timarron, Southlake Boulevard Corridor, Dove Road & Westridge and West Dove. The full list of areas is on our Southlake page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
What is a plumbing blow out?
It uses high volume air to clear water out of the underground lines, so there is nothing left in them to freeze and crack the pipes over winter.
Do you use antifreeze in the lines?
Yes, where it is needed. After the blow out, winter plugs go in and non toxic antifreeze is added to critical lines as extra protection against freezing.
How do I know the pool was closed properly?
You get an E-Report confirmation with time stamped photos of the lines being winterized and the cover being secured.
Why does a pool need closing rather than just covering?
Because the damage winter causes is done by water left in the plumbing and equipment, not by the pool being uncovered. Water expands as it freezes, which is what cracks pipes, pumps, filters and heaters. Closing is mainly about getting water out of the places it should not be and leaving the remaining water treated.
Puddle Pools is such a great company! Our previous pool boy (my husband) got fired from pool duty because it was turning into a green swamp! Chris Reeves came out same day to get an initial consultation and get us started. Noah, Ian, and Chris came out every day for a week to turn our swamp into a blue lagoon that we could enjoy that weekend! Every clean is documented with every chemical used (chemicals included in service!), and pictures so you can see their results. So happy to have Ian and Noah as reliable pool boys to keep our pool ready for my kiddos to use this summer! 10/10 ⭐️
After 25 years of tending to pool duties on my own because no one else could possibly do it better than me, I turned it ALL over to Chris Reeves with Puddle Pools. I have a high maintenance pool under a canopy of trees. The water is usually dark green for most of April and May. Last week inside of 3 days, it was crystal clear and ready to use. I’ve found that they are also able to handle any pool need from water treatment to any type of pool equipment. They are reliable, trustworthy and provide a real value for the money. I highly recommend them. They’re making my life so much easier.
Honest people that will take care of you. Chris came out to give me a quote on pool services. Chris was very honest telling me what options made sense for my situation and didn’t pressure me to make a decision. I ended up hiring Puddle Pools to detect a suspected leak I had. They identified a leaky valve and quickly showed up to fix that valve. Highly recommend using Puddle Pools. Ask for Chris. Good Dude.
I would not go to anyone else to have my pool cleaned. Customer service is second to none and they take pride in doing the highest quality of work. They are reliable and efficient, I will be a customer for life.
