Keeping Your Pool Clean: A Multi-Step Approach

At a glance swimming pools might seem simple enough: fill it up, throw in chemicals and skim it out when necessary — if only it were that easy! The reality is that pools are made up of complex systems hard at work just below the surface. If just one of these systems begin to fail it will have a ripple effect throughout your swim space. Balancing Pool Chemicals: Unlike a bathtub you can’t just pull the plug on a swimming pool whenever water starts to get dirty. Keeping water crystal clear in a swim space means maintaining proper water chemistry and that means using a variety of pool chemicals. Like any chemicals, these can be dangerous if not handled correctly, so it is always better to leave this up to the pros. Shocking the pool might provide an instant visual improvements but this will be largely superficial and doesn’t necessarily mean that water is safe to swim in. Achieving sanitary water means balancing sanitizers like chlorine or bromine as well as pH levels, total alkalinity and calcium. Chemically treated water not only looks better, it prevents algae growth and contamination for a safe swim space. 

Debris Removal: Even with a pool cover on, debris and unwanted items still have a way of sneaking inside water systems. Depending on plant life and surrounding areas, removing debris from your pool can feel like a full-time job. Floating items need to be scooped out, skimmer baskets need to be emptied but just running a pool vacuum isn’t enough to clear away heavy items from the bottom of your pool. There isn’t much point in clearing unwanted items away from large, open pool surfaces while leaving debris and bacteria tucked into corners or the hard angles around stairs. Water Circulation & Filtration: You can spend a ton of your leisure time skimming and water testing but if the internal systems that keep this water moving begin to fail, your pool won’t stay clean for long! A pool filter is designed to trap and hold unwanted items while filtered water passes through. This is great in theory but over time clogs and blockages will form if filters aren’t cleaned regularly. This means it takes more effort to push water through and that means using more energy and forcing your pool pump to work harder. Any added strain to circulation systems means a shortened lifespan and the high cost of repairs and replacements. A cartridge filter should be removed, cleaned and reinstalled every 3-4 months while a sand filter should be emptied and refilled with clean sand every 3-5 years.
