When it comes to a swimming pool a leak means serious trouble, not only for the pool itself but for the surrounding area as well. On average, pools hold hundreds of gallons of water at any given time so even a pinhole leak can lead to serious water loss. This involves setting a bucket of watch next to your pool and having to mark the water level in each. If, after a few days, the water level in your pool is significantly lower in the pool than it is in the bucket, you are dealing with one or more water leaks. Once you’ve identified that you are losing water, it is time to locate the problem area.
Structural Leaks: The most common causes of structural leaks are physical damage caused by blunt force or tears in pool liners. Something as simple as sharp piece of debris can cause small tears in a vinyl liner that will grow larger over time. Tracking down these types of leaks means putting a dye test to use. A dye test involves turning off pool pumps so water settles and is still. From here, coloured dyes are strategically applied throughout pool basins where they will be attracted to the vacuum created by a crack or leak. These can be followed visually.
Plumbing Leaks: When managing an above ground pool it is often easier to track down the causes of water loss simply because you have a full view of structures and equipment. Inground pools, however, are more complicated because their components are below the surfaces and out of sight. Identifying plumbing leaks requires a pressure test. This process involves applying a steady stream of pressurized air to plumbing and return lines. When this air flow comes into contact with cracks or openings it will create air bubbles that can be tracked visually. In the case of underground leaks saturated soil will make gurgling sounds that can be followed with speciality listening equipment.

Can a hot tub or spa leak be detected the same way?
Yes. Spas and hot tubs have plumbing, jets and fittings that can leak just like a pool. The same testing approach applies, adapted to the spa's equipment.
Does a vinyl liner pool leak differently from a concrete pool?
The usual suspects differ. Vinyl liners tend to leak through tears, punctures or around fittings and faceplates, while concrete and plaster pools are more likely to leak through cracks or at tile lines, lights and returns. Dye testing works on both.
How do I know if my pool is leaking or just losing water to evaporation?
Some water loss is normal, especially in hot, dry or windy weather and after heavy use. A leak is more likely when the level keeps dropping faster than the weather explains, when it drops even with the pump off, when the ground near the pool or equipment stays wet or when you are adding water every few days. A simple bucket test (a bucket of pool water on a step, comparing the two levels after a day) helps separate the two, and a leak detection visit confirms it.
How do you find a pool leak?
We test the pool in stages rather than guessing. Pressure testing tells us whether the plumbing lines are holding, and dye testing shows where water is escaping at fittings, cracks, lights, skimmers and returns. Checking both the structure and the plumbing matters, because a pool can leak from more than one place.
