Ajax Pool Leak Detection

When it comes to a swimming pool a leak means serious trouble, not only for the pool itself but for the surrounding area as well. On average, pools hold hundreds of gallons of water at any given time so even a pinhole leak can lead to serious water loss. Over time, even a small leak will lead to water damage, flooding, damaged materials and high water bills. Don’t deal with the aftermath of water loss when you can call Puddle for your Ajax pool leak detection.

Part of what makes leak detection in pools so complicated is figuring out if you are dealing with a leak at all! You might notice that your water level has dropped but this is something that can occur naturally. High heats will cause water to evaporate and high traffic means swimmers will carry pool water out with them or force it out through cannonballs.

Identifying Pool Leaks: What to Watch Out For

During the summer season it is common for swimming pools to lose approximately 3-5 inches of water over the course of a week. If you find yourself dealing with higher rates of water loss or filling your pool with a garden hose on a daily basis, you have a few things to consider: namely, the climate and your rate of use.

In the event that your water loss can’t be explained, it is time to consider a leak. Traditionally the best at-home test for pool leaks is the bucket test. This involves setting a bucket of watch next to your pool and having to mark the water level in each. If, after a few days, the water level in your pool is significantly lower in the pool than it is in the bucket, you are dealing with one or more water leaks. Once you’ve identified that you are losing water, it is time to locate the problem area.

Structural Leaks: The most common causes of structural leaks are physical damage caused by blunt force or tears in pool liners. Something as simple as sharp piece of debris can cause small tears in a vinyl liner that will grow larger over time. Tracking down these types of leaks means putting a dye test to use. A dye test involves turning off pool pumps so water settles and is still. From here, coloured dyes are strategically applied throughout pool basins where they will be attracted to the vacuum created by a crack or leak. These can be followed visually.

Plumbing Leaks: When managing an above ground pool it is often easier to track down the causes of water loss simply because you have a full view of structures and equipment. Inground pools, however, are more complicated because their components are below the surfaces and out of sight. Identifying plumbing leaks requires a pressure test. This process involves applying a steady stream of pressurized air to plumbing and return lines. When this air flow comes into contact with cracks or openings it will create air bubbles that can be tracked visually. In the case of underground leaks saturated soil will make gurgling sounds that can be followed with speciality listening equipment.
