Balancing Water Chemistry: The difference between a pool and a pond is chemically treated water. Without regular chemical applications it won’t take long for water to go cloudy and for algae growth to form. Balancing water keeps swimmers safe, prevents recreational water illnesses and helps to limit contaminants. In order to maintain a sanitary swim space it is important to balance chlorine levels, pH levels, calcium and total alkalinity. Simple test strips might help to navigate obvious issues with sanitizers but these often won’t cover the whole spectrum of water care — and they definitely won’t tell you how to problem solve! 

Ditch Debris: Whether inside or outdoors, swimming pools are always going to be dealing with debris. In addition to vacuuming out unwanted items from the bottom of the pool and scooping up floating debris, it is important to empty skimmer baskets for a completely clean slate. 

Figuring Out Filtration Systems: As much as you might try to skim out debris, it is impossible to catch it all. Pool filters are your last line of defence against debris. A cartridge filter uses mesh screens to trap and hold unwanted items and should be removed, cleaned and reinstalled every 3-4 months. A sand filter allows water to flow in, filtering debris out and circulating cleaned water back into basins. These filters should be emptied and refilled with clean sand every 3-5 years.
