Austin pool service questions
Is Austin water hard?
Moderately hard, and less hard than you have probably been told. Austin Water’s own 2025 quality report puts total hardness at about 83 mg/L, roughly 4.9 grains per gallon. Water-softener companies publish much higher figures for Austin and call it extremely hard, but those numbers do not trace back to the utility report. The supply comes from the Colorado River through Lake Travis and Lake Austin, so Hill Country limestone is genuinely in the story, it simply does not produce extreme hardness by the time it reaches you. How does Austin water compare with the rest of Texas?
It is at the soft end, which cuts against the usual assumption. Austin runs about 83 mg/L. Plano, on a different utility drawing from Lavon Lake, runs around 260 mg/L, roughly three times as hard. So “Texas water is hard” does not survive contact with the actual numbers, even inside one state, and a scale routine written for North Texas is more than an Austin pool needs. Does Austin water still cause scale on pool equipment?
Less than the marketing suggests, but calcium is still calcium. At about 4.9 grains per gallon the tendency is mild, so the practical risk is not runaway scaling but drift: calcium hardness creeping up over seasons through evaporation and top-ups, since what evaporates is water and what stays behind is minerals.
