More swimmers, faster chemistry
A pool used by many people each day behaves differently from a backyard pool. Sanitizer gets used up faster, the filter carries a heavier load and the water slides out of balance sooner, which is why commercial pools are serviced on a shorter cycle and monitored between visits. A busy hotel or fitness center may need its water chemistry checked daily with scheduled service on top, and the interval follows use rather than the calendar. Commercial hot tubs and spas move even faster, with heavy use in a small volume of hot water, and they can be serviced with the pool on one plan. Record keeping comes with the job as well, which home pools never have to think about. Service is carried out by CPO certified technicians.
Who we serve and how visits fit your hours
Commercial clients include hotels and hospitality businesses, fitness centers and health clubs, homeowners associations, apartment and condo communities, schools and community facilities. Usage patterns and access limits differ across all of them, so quotes are built around the facility rather than the size of the pool alone. Shutting a pool at peak times costs a facility guests or members, which makes service outside opening hours the practical choice for most. Mention it when you ask for a quote. Each visit ends with an E-Report covering the work done, the water readings and photos, so a manager has a record without being on site. Between visits, cloudy water, a strong chemical smell or equipment noise is worth a call to your local team straight away.
Regulations and who sets them
Commercial pools are regulated, and the requirements for testing frequency, record keeping and water quality vary by state and municipality. Your local team can explain how each visit is documented to support the rules that apply to your facility, but confirm the rules themselves with your own local authority. The state sets a baseline for construction: RSA 155-A defines the New Hampshire building code to include the 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, and towns may adopt stricter rules. Stormwater oversight is shared too. Durham, Dover, Portsmouth, Rochester, Exeter, Hampton, Salem and Derry all appear on EPA's list of regulated New Hampshire communities under the Small MS4 General Permit, which shapes how pool water may reach a storm drain.
Draining a large pool to a storm drain
Emptying or lowering a commercial pool puts a lot of water into the system, so the dechlorination rules matter. Rochester's stormwater code allows dechlorinated swimming pool water into the municipal storm drain and sets the threshold at less than 1 ppm chlorine. Derry's code goes further. It bars pool, fountain or spa water carrying a harmful quantity of chlorine, muriatic acid or other treatment or cleaning chemicals from the storm system, allowing drainage there only after a test kit shows a zero chlorine reading. Portsmouth's stormwater ordinance leaves pool water off its list of allowed discharges altogether, so DPW is the place to ask there. Plan the method with the town before any water leaves the pool.
Filling with trucked or city water
Large fills raise their own questions. Rochester's DPW does not use its equipment to fill private pools, and private companies need written DPW authority to use system water. Pool water haulers there must use the City's designated bulk water stations, and drawing from a hydrant counts as tampering. Portsmouth's ordinance lets its water utility restrict or prohibit water use when that is needed to conserve supply, so a big fill during a dry spell is worth checking with DPW first. Salem requires separate meters for outside water use at residential properties. Ask your town how metering and supply rules apply to your site before the first big fill of the season.
Durham NH Commercial Pool Services: Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Salem tap water change through the year?
Salem's Utilities page says Canobie Lake is the primary source from May through October and Arlington Pond in the colder months, with treated Lake Massabesic water from Manchester Water Works also arriving through the Southern NH Regional Water Project. The Town's 2025 water report lists sodium of 61.9 mg/L in Canobie Lake water and 34.8 mg/L in Arlington Pond water. A pool or spa topped up across the switch can see its balance shift, which regular testing picks up.
Can a water hauler fill a pool with Rochester city water?
Only through the City's process. Rochester's water code says DPW does not use its equipment to fill private pools, private companies need written DPW authority to use system water and pool water haulers must use the City's designated bulk water stations. Drawing water from a hydrant counts as tampering. Contact DPW before arranging a large fill for a home or commercial pool.
Which Durham NH neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Durham NH, including Downtown Durham, University of New Hampshire, Madbury Road & Faculty Neighborhoods, Lee, Madbury and Newmarket. The full list of areas is on our Durham NH page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Do you service commercial hot tubs and spas too?
Yes. Commercial spas see heavy use in a small volume of hot water, so chemistry changes quickly and needs close attention. They can be serviced alongside the pool on the same plan.
How do we know what was done on each visit?
Every visit ends with an E-Report showing what was done, the water readings and photos, so managers have a record without having to be on site.
