Keeping your pool running smoothly takes a lot more than a skimming every now and then.

    Home service, start to finish

Residential service covers the full routine: balancing the water, removing debris, cleaning the filters and scrubbing away residue and stains, with the liner, covers and equipment looked after along the way. It applies to indoor pools, outdoor pools and hot tubs, and a hot tub can share the same visit and the same plan as the pool. Service plans come in tiers, so you can match the schedule and the scope to how your household uses the pool. Your local team recommends a plan once it has seen the pool, the equipment and how much attention they need. The teams are locally owned and operated, so the technician who looks after your pool works in the same towns you do.

Deep cleans and service through the year

A pool bought with a new house or left alone for a season is usually better served by a deep clean first. Options cover deep cleans as well as routine service, which lets a neglected pool get back on track before a regular plan keeps it there. Service can also run through the whole year, adjusted to the season, so the pool is protected during the months it sees little use. Balanced water is what ties it together. A shift in alkalinity or pH can make the water corrosive to equipment or leave scale and staining, and both lead to repairs that regular balancing avoids. After every visit the E-Report shows what was done, the chemical readings and before and after photos.

Which water system serves your house

Seacoast homes draw on a surprising mix of supplies. The UNH/Durham system is a small one, with about 30 miles of pipe and 1,200 water meters according to the Town's Water Division page. Exeter's municipal system serves the majority of the town from the Exeter River, the Exeter Reservoir and several wells across about 55 miles of pipe. In Hampton, North Hampton and Rye, water comes from Aquarion's Hampton system, which pumps from 16 state approved wells and serves about 18,000 residents. Its 2025 report averaged 80 ppm chloride and 58 ppm sodium. Plenty of homes sit outside every one of these systems and fill from a private well. Knowing which applies to you tells your technician where balancing starts.

    Permits, setbacks and fill credits

A few town rules shape what you can do around a home pool. Salem requires both a building permit and an electric permit for a residential pool, and its zoning lets a pool come within 15 feet of the rear lot line in the Residential District and within 15 feet of a side or rear lot line in the Rural District. Rochester's code allows an approved sewer deduct meter for uses that include swimming pool filling, while Dover offers sewered customers one pool credit a year off sewer usage. Salem takes the opposite approach and allows no sewer credit for filling pools. Rules like these belong to each town, so check with yours before adding or changing anything around the pool.

    Fencing rules in Hampton

Hampton has its own pool enclosure rule, adopted by the Health Officer under state law. Outdoor pools deeper than 3 feet when full must have a wall, fence or other enclosure at least 4 feet high around the entire pool, built so children cannot crawl or pass through except by the gate or door. Every gate has to be locked whenever the pool is unattended. Elevated and surface pools with sides higher than 4 feet need no separate fence. For a family pool that makes the gate habit as important as the fence itself, so locking up at the end of each swim is worth building into the routine. If you plan to replace or move a fence, confirm the requirement with the Town first.

Durham NH Residential Pool Services: Frequently Asked Questions

What fence does a pool need in Hampton, New Hampshire?

Hampton's Health Officer regulation (Chapter 780) requires outdoor pools deeper than 3 feet when full to have a wall, fence or other enclosure at least 4 feet high around the entire pool, built so children cannot get through except by the gate or door. All gates must be locked when the pool is unattended. Elevated and surface pools with sides higher than 4 feet need no fence. Confirm with the Town before building or changing an enclosure.

Why does Salem tap water change through the year?

Salem's Utilities page says Canobie Lake is the primary source from May through October and Arlington Pond in the colder months, with treated Lake Massabesic water from Manchester Water Works also arriving through the Southern NH Regional Water Project. The Town's 2025 water report lists sodium of 61.9 mg/L in Canobie Lake water and 34.8 mg/L in Arlington Pond water. A pool or spa topped up across the switch can see its balance shift, which regular testing picks up.

    Does Salem inspect pool barriers?

Yes. Salem's Building Safety pool handout requires a building permit and an electric permit for a residential pool, along with a statement of the safety barrier. Above ground pools get a barrier inspection if a slope or deck reduces the barrier height below 48 inches, and in ground pools get a barrier inspection that includes an alarm where one is required. Check with Salem Building Safety before installing or changing a pool.

Why is water balance so important for a home pool?

Balanced water is safer for swimmers and kinder to the pool. A shift in alkalinity or pH can make the water corrosive to equipment or cause scale and staining, which leads to repairs that regular balancing avoids.

Will I know what was done on each visit?

Yes. After every visit you get an E-Report with what was done, the chemical readings and before and after photos.
