Ingersoll Seasonal Pool Maintenance

Cleaning and maintaining a swimming pool is a top priority at the height of summer but as the seasons change, it is easy for pool care to take a backseat. The truth is that keeping your pool in great shape all year long means in-depth seasonal treatments, particularly when it comes to protecting your pool from winter weather. Whether you are heading into the fall or are getting ready to spring into the swim season, there is never a bad time to call Puddle for your Ingersoll seasonal pool maintenance.

Seasonal Pool Care: What to Do & When

A changing of the seasons can sneak up on you but while you are throwing on a jacket or toque your swimming pool is left out in the cold — literally! Failing to close a swimming pool for the winter means the risk of serious damage, as well as water contamination. An improper closing can actually prolong your opening in the spring, meaning you miss out on the first warms days — or even weeks! — of spring.

Instead of dealing with damage or missing out on summer fun, call a local Puddle technician to care for your swimming pool all year long.

Fall Pool Care: Swimming pools are built to be durable but even these aren’t strong enough to stand up to an Ontario winter. Sub-zero temperatures make plastic brittle, while frozen water can damage pool equipment or lead to burst pipes. If a pipe bursts it is not only a problem for your pool, it can flood surrounding areas, wrecking lawns and landscaping, flooding structures or damaging nearby construction materials.

The best way to protect your pool from freezing temperatures is by winterizing plugs, dropping the water level and applying a specialized mix of winter chemicals designed to prevent freezing and reduce the risk of algae growth. A pool closing should be done when the average outdoor temperature reaches 15 degrees. If you are getting ready to close your pool, it is a good idea to swap out mesh pool covers for solid winter covers. Just this simple swap goes a long way in preventing algae growth.

Spring Pool Care: Even after a professional closing, getting your pool ready for the season is hard work. After months of disuse, pool water is likely green, full of debris, smells awful and is full of bacteria and contamination. If this is the case, a basic test kit won’t be enough to balance water chemistry but our team of local Puddle Pros are here to help! In an inground pool it is important to refill the water level, which can be done with a simple garden hose while an above ground pool will need to have water bags removed. Debris will then need to be removed from the pool basin itself as well as in skimmer baskets. Pool openings are best done when the average outdoor temperature reaches 21 degrees.

When starting a new season it is important to inspect all of the equipment and internal systems that keep your water flowing. If a pool pump begins to break down, it will leave water sitting stagnant and prone to contamination. Sitting water is dirty water so make sure that pumps, return lines and filters are in good, working order. It is a good idea to check up on your filter when you open your pool. A cartridge filter should be removed, cleaned and replaced every 3-4 months while a sand filter should be emptied and replaced with clean sand every 3-5 years.
