Richmond Hill Pool Leak Detection

Even a small leak in a pool can be enough to wreck your entire swim season. This is bad in a residential property but it is even worse for businesses. More than just losing a bit of water, if a pool is leaking it will have serious consequences for surrounding areas as well. If you suspect that you are losing water, don’t hesitate to call Puddle for your Richmond Hill pool leak detection.

Every year pool owners try to tackle weekly maintenance and cleaning on their own, only to end up with subpar results. An amateur approach to pool cleaning can end in DIY disasters and this is even worse when dealing with a leak. Part of what makes diagnosing a swimming pool leak so complicated is navigating the difference between natural water loss, plumbing leaks and structural leaks. Luckily, local Puddle Pros are outfitted with all of the necessary tools and resources to test swim spaces of all shapes, sizes and styles.

Leak Detection in Pools: What to Expect

If you notice that your pool water level is looking low, it is easy to grab a garden hose and refill it but if you find yourself doing this more and more often, it is a sign of major issues. When dealing with high heats and a busy swim day it is common for water levels to drop. High heats cause evaporation and if there are many people getting in and out of the pool they are carrying water out with them. On average it is common for pools to lose anywhere between 3-5 inches of water on a weekly basis. If you are noticing more than that it is time to consider a leak.

Whether you are dealing with an above ground pool or an inground model, leaks are always a risk. As dangerous as leaks are they often start off small, getting worse over time. When you are losing water, it has to go somewhere! Even a pinhole leak can lead to drowned lawns, flooded basements, rotten construction materials and water damage. Just identifying that you are dealing with a leak is a serious victory but it is only the first step in a long process!

Pressure Testing: Plumbing leaks are extremely dangerous because they often happen behind the scenes. This makes them difficult to track visually and will also lead to serious issues happening behind the scenes. These are commonly caused by corrosion or root damage. Pressure testing involves applying a pressurized stream of air to plumbing and return lines. If these come into contact with a crack or opening, it will create air bubbles that can be tracked visually. When dealing with an underground leak soil will be saturated and air streams will create gurgling noises that can be tracked with listening equipment.

Dye Testing: A dye test is best used for tracking down structural water loss or leaks in vinyl liners. This process involves turning off the pool pump and waiting for water to go still. From here coloured dyes are applied strategically throughout the pool water. Dyes weigh more than pool water alone so it will be attracted to any openings or leaks in structures or in the pool liner.
