Keeping your pool running smoothly takes a lot more than a skimming every now and then.

    Bather load sets the pace

The main difference between a commercial pool and one in a backyard is how many people use it. A pool shared by guests, residents or members burns through sanitizer faster, loads the filter harder and drifts out of balance sooner, so it is serviced on a shorter cycle and watched more closely between visits. The interval follows use rather than the calendar. A busy hotel or fitness facility may need daily attention to water chemistry with scheduled service visits on top, while a small community pool can work on a lighter plan. Heat adds to the load. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give Healdsburg about 58 days a year at 90 F or more and Sonoma about 44.3 and those are the afternoons when pool decks fill up and chemistry moves fastest. Commercial spas, with hot water in a small volume, need especially close attention.

    Facilities we look after

Commercial work covers hotels and hospitality properties, fitness centers and health clubs, homeowners associations, apartment and condominium communities, schools and community facilities. Each one has its own pattern of use and its own limits on access, which is why a commercial quote is based on the facility and not just the size of the pool. Service can usually be scheduled outside opening hours, which for most sites is the practical choice, since closing a pool to guests or members at peak times is costly. Raise your preferred windows when you ask for a quote so they are built into the plan. Spas and hot tubs on the same property can be serviced alongside the pool. Managers get an E-Report after every visit showing what was done, the water readings and photos, so there is a record without anyone having to be on site.

Shared pools sit outside the home barrier law

California's Swimming Pool Safety Act, the law that sets drowning prevention features for pools at single family homes, does not reach every pool. Health and Safety Code 115925 says the article does not cover public swimming pools or apartment complexes and other residential settings beyond single family homes. That does not leave commercial pools unregulated. Requirements for testing frequency, record keeping and water quality are set by other authorities and differ by state, county and city, so the rules your facility follows are not the ones a homeowner reads about. Your local team can explain how service is documented to support whatever applies to you, but always confirm the requirements with your own local authority. Regular E-Reports give you a dated history of chemistry readings to work from.

Draining a large pool or backwashing a DE filter

Commercial pools hold a lot of water, so where it goes when a pool is lowered or a filter is cleaned matters. Rules vary across the territory. In the Sonoma Valley, the Sonoma Valley County Sanitation District's code prohibits sending swimming pool drainage or diatomaceous earth filter backwash to the sewer unless the District issues a specific permit where there is no reasonable alternative. When pool contents are allowed into the sanitary sewer, Section 6.17 limits the discharge to a pipe no larger than 1 inch under no more than 20 feet of head, pumped at no more than 100 gallons per minute, with an approved separator and an approved air gap. In Napa, the Napa Sanitation District Code prohibits discharging pool water to the sewer without special permission from the General Manager. Confirm the method with the district before any large discharge.

Water shortage stages and public pools

Shortage plans across the area treat pools as one of the first uses to limit and one spells out how a public pool fits in. Sebastopol's Abridged Water Shortage Contingency Plan prohibits filling, refilling or adding to swimming pools, wading pools and spas at Stage 4, its critical stage with a 40 percent reduction, with one exception: the County public pool may still fill in June, July and August. At Stage 5 that exception ends too. A commercial pool that loses water to a leak or heavy splash is harder to keep full once a stage is declared. Between visits, call your local team when the water looks wrong rather than waiting. Cloudy water, a strong chemical smell or new equipment noise in a public pool are always worth checking early.

Santa Rosa Commercial Pool Services: Frequently Asked Questions

Does California's home pool barrier law cover apartment and public pools in Santa Rosa?

No. Health and Safety Code 115925 says the Swimming Pool Safety Act article does not apply to public swimming pools or to apartment complexes and other residential settings beyond single family homes. Shared and commercial pools are regulated separately, with requirements that vary by authority. Confirm what applies to your facility with your local authority.

Which Santa Rosa neighborhoods do you cover?

We look after pools across Santa Rosa, including Downtown, Railroad Square, West End, St. Rose and Cherry Street, SOFA District and Junior College Area. The full list of areas is on our Santa Rosa page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.

What should we do if the water looks wrong between visits?

Call your local team rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit. Cloudy water, a strong chemical smell or equipment noise are all worth reporting, and in a public pool it is always better to check early.

How is commercial pool service different from residential?

Bather load is the main difference and it changes everything downstream. A pool used by many people each day uses up sanitizer faster, loads the filter harder and moves out of balance more quickly, so commercial pools are typically serviced on a shorter cycle and monitored between visits. There is usually a record keeping requirement as well, which home pools do not have.

How often does a commercial pool need servicing?

More often than a home pool, and the interval is driven by use rather than by the calendar. A busy hotel or fitness facility pool may need daily attention to water chemistry with scheduled service visits on top. The right schedule depends on your facility's traffic and the requirements that apply where you operate.
