Santa Rosa Pool Maintenance
Puddle Pool Services maintains pools in Santa Rosa and nearby towns such as Napa, Sonoma, Windsor and Healdsburg, looking after the equipment as well as the water. Visits cover the pump, filter, heater, valves and visible plumbing alongside testing and balancing the chemistry. Wear is caught early, while it is still a small fix.

Maintenance looks past the water
A pool can sparkle while the machinery behind it is quietly wearing out. Cleaning deals with the water and the surfaces you can see. Maintenance adds the system that keeps them that way: the pump and its baskets, the filter and its pressure, the heater, the valves and the plumbing within reach, plus the condition of the liner or surface, the covers and the fittings. The warning signs tend to creep in slowly. The pool takes longer to clear than it used to, the pump changes its sound, pressure readings wander away from their usual range or the water simply gets harder to keep balanced. Mention any of these as soon as you notice them. Equipment trouble costs less to put right early and a visit that looks at the whole system is how it gets found before a part fails outright.
Backwashing in a region that plans for shortages
Filters need cleaning and on many systems that means a backwash that sends water out of the pool. Healdsburg's water efficiency tips put a single traditional filter backwash at 180 to 250 gallons and the same tips recommend covering pools and spas to save water. That adds up in a part of California where every city plans ahead for dry years. Under Napa's water shortage rules, Stage 2 bars draining and refilling any pool unless it is needed for leak repair or to correct a severe chemical imbalance. Stages 1 and 2 take effect by order of the Utilities Director, while Stages 3 to 6 need a City Council resolution. Filter pressure is checked on every visit, so cleaning happens when the filter actually needs it instead of out of habit.
When the plant changes, so does the fill water
Napa shows why one water test is never enough. The City of Napa's 2025 Drinking Water Quality Report describes three sources, depending on which treatment plant is running: State Water Project supply from Barker Slough in the Sacramento Delta, Lake Hennessey and Lake Milliken. Total hardness averaged 111 ppm but ranged from 79 to 142 ppm, so water added in one season may not match water added in another. Sonoma follows a different pattern. The City of Sonoma's own wells measured 56.1 ppm, soft by most standards, while the Sonoma Water supply it buys averaged 92.3 ppm across a range of 36 to 125 ppm. Water that drifts low in alkalinity or pH can attack metal parts, heaters and fittings, while water that runs high tends to leave scale, so readings are taken at your own pool on every visit.
Long pump days in the warmer valleys
How long the pump should run comes down to the size of the pool and the capacity of the pump, because the goal is to move the full volume of water through the filter each day. Too little run time is the most common reason water will not stay clear, while running far longer than needed mostly adds to the electricity bill. Heat raises the stakes. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Sonoma station, under a kilometer from the Plaza, show July and August average highs of 86.0 F and 86.1 F, with about 44.3 days a year reaching 90 F. Napa's station averages 84.4 F in September, above its July figure of 83.3 F. Warm water uses up sanitizer faster and works the circulation harder, so your technician can suggest a run time that suits your own equipment.
A schedule that follows the year
Most customers adjust service to the season rather than keep one pattern for twelve months. Visits tend to be heavier while the pool is in daily use and lighter once the rain returns and some equipment work is easier to handle when nobody is swimming. Winter totals vary a lot across the territory: NOAA's normals give Napa about 26.66 inches of precipitation a year, Sonoma 28.35 inches and Healdsburg 42.81 inches. A pool that sits unused through those months still needs care. Standing water left untreated is far more work to recover than water kept in balance and equipment that sits idle without being run or properly shut down is where problems develop unnoticed. Either keep the pool on a maintenance plan or have it closed properly. Every visit ends with an E-Report showing the readings and photos.
Santa Rosa Pool Maintenance: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Santa Rosa tap water already contain chlorine when I fill my pool?
Yes, a small amount. Santa Rosa Water's 2025 Water Quality Report lists a free chlorine residual in the distribution system of 0.11 to 1.90 ppm, averaging 1.16 ppm. It also notes that fluoride is not added. After a refill or an opening your technician tests the new water and balances it for pool use rather than relying on what the tap provides.
Which Santa Rosa neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Santa Rosa, including Downtown, Railroad Square, West End, St. Rose and Cherry Street, SOFA District and Junior College Area. The full list of areas is on our Santa Rosa page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Is maintenance still needed if the pool is not being used?
Yes. Standing, untreated water is more work to recover than water that has been kept balanced, and equipment that sits idle without being run or properly shut down is where problems develop quietly. A pool that is out of use either needs maintaining or needs closing properly.
Can maintenance be scheduled around the season?
Yes, and most customers do. Service is usually heavier through the swimming season and lighter outside it, and some equipment work is better done when the pool is not in use. It is worth discussing the pattern rather than assuming one schedule fits the whole year.
Why does water chemistry matter for my equipment?
Unbalanced water does more than look bad. Water that drifts too low in alkalinity or pH becomes corrosive to metal parts, heaters and fittings, while water that runs high tends to leave scale. Keeping chemistry in range is one of the simplest ways to protect equipment.
