What happens on a cleaning visit

Your technician works through the pool in one pass so nothing is left half done. Floating leaves and debris come off the surface first, then the walls and steps are brushed and the floor is vacuumed. The skimmer and pump baskets are emptied, the filter is checked and the water is tested and brought back into balance. Keeping these jobs together is deliberate: brushing stirs up fine dirt the filter then has to catch, and balancing the water before the debris is out would mean chasing a moving target. You can be out while this happens. Leave a gate unlocked or arrange access and mention any dogs or alarms on the way to the equipment. The E-Report that follows shows the work, the chemical readings and photos from before and after.

Why Santa Rosa pools need care in every season

Santa Rosa has a Mediterranean pattern of mild wet winters and warm dry summers. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Santa Rosa station, in the southeast of the city, show a January average high of 59.7 F and a low of 38.4 F, with only about 14.9 nights a year at or below freezing. Pools here are treated as operating all year rather than being put away for the winter, so the work never fully stops. The warm end of the year is later than many people expect. September is the warmest month by average high at 83.9 F, ahead of August at 83.0 F and July at 81.6 F. About 25.8 days a year reach 90 F. Warm water burns through sanitizer quickly, so weekly visits suit most pools in regular use, while a pool used lightly can often go every other week.

Russian River water from the tap

Santa Rosa Water's 2025 Water Quality Report says the city buys about 95 percent of its water from Sonoma Water. That supply is Russian River water drawn through collector wells about 80 feet below the riverbed, filtered naturally and treated only with chlorine and with sodium hydroxide for pH. The report calls the result moderately hard, at an average of 112 ppm, which works out to about 6.5 grains per gallon. A small share comes from two city groundwater wells, and that water is noticeably different: about 138 ppm of hardness and 230 to 240 ppm of total alkalinity, against roughly 100 ppm alkalinity in the Sonoma Water supply. The report also lists a distribution pH of 7.4 to 8.4. Each top up adds a little more calcium as water evaporates and minerals stay behind, which is why hardness and alkalinity are tested along with pH and sanitizer on every visit.

Fill water changes from town to town

A few miles can change what comes out of the hose. Rohnert Park blends Sonoma Water with its own wells, and its 2025 report puts the city wells at an average of about 230 ppm of hardness, hard to very hard, against about 92 ppm for the Sonoma Water supply. Sebastopol runs entirely on local groundwater, reported at 150 ppm with a range of 120 to 160 ppm. Windsor pumps most of its water from wells near the Russian River and averaged 118 ppm, while Healdsburg's own well fields ranged from 72 to 182 ppm during 2025. Those differences decide how quickly scale forms on tile and inside the heater. Your technician balances for the water your pool actually receives instead of a regional average, which matters most where a supply shifts between sources through the year.

    Wildfire season and between visits

The Santa Rosa Fire Department notes that the city has been directly affected or threatened by wildfires in neighboring areas every year since 2017. The City's wildland fire evacuation checklist tells residents to bring flammable outdoor items inside or put them in the pool before leaving. If you have ever had to do that, let your technician know before the next visit so the water and equipment can be checked and cleaned with that in mind. Day to day, two small habits keep the pool in good shape between visits: empty the skimmer basket if it fills up and run the pump long enough each day to circulate the full volume of water. Cloudy water or a strong chlorine smell is worth reporting straight away rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.

Santa Rosa Pool Cleaning: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Santa Rosa water hard enough to affect my pool or hot tub?

Santa Rosa Water's 2025 Water Quality Report describes the city's water as moderately hard, at an average of 112 ppm, or about 6.5 grains per gallon. That is manageable with regular testing. In a hot tub, though, minerals concentrate quickly as water evaporates and is topped up, so hardness is worth checking alongside pH and sanitizer on every visit.

Does all Santa Rosa tap water have the same chemistry?

Not quite. According to Santa Rosa Water's 2025 report, about 95 percent comes from Sonoma Water's Russian River supply, while the city's two wells run harder at about 138 ppm and carry total alkalinity of 230 to 240 ppm, against roughly 100 ppm in the Sonoma Water supply. The wells are only a small share of the supply, but high alkalinity fill water can push pools and fountains toward scale, so testing each visit catches the difference.

Do I need to worry about freezing in Santa Rosa?

Only on a handful of nights. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Santa Rosa count about 14.9 nights a year at or below 32 F, with a median last spring freeze on February 25 and a median first fall freeze on December 1. Pools run all year here, but hot tub equipment and exposed fountain pumps and lines deserve attention on those cold nights.

Why is my pool still cloudy right after a cleaning?

Cleaning removes debris and corrects the chemistry, but the filter still needs time to clear fine particles from the water. Slight cloudiness usually settles as the pump runs. If it does not clear, or it gets worse, let your technician know so the filter and chemistry can be checked.

Can my hot tub be cleaned on the same visit?

Yes. If you have a hot tub as well as a pool, it can be serviced on the same visit and the same plan.
