Whistler Pool Leak Detection

Whistler might be known as a hot spot for skiing and snowboarding but don’t discount how nice it is to pass a summer day poolside. When there are thousands of litres of water in a single space, even a pinhole leak can put a stop to your summer fun and lead to serious damage. If you suspect that your swimming pool is losing water but aren’t sure how to track down problem areas, call Puddle for your Whistler pool leak detection services.

Part of what makes diagnosing a pool leak such a complicated process is that water loss can occur naturally or due to physical damage. High heats cause water to evaporate and swimmers will carry pool water out with them. On average, it is common for swimming pools to lose between 3-5 inches of water over the course of a week. If you are losing more than that or find yourself having to add water on a daily basis, don’t hesitate to call a local Puddle Pro.

Leak Detection in Pools: Identifying Water Loss & Tracking Problem Areas

The best way to assess water loss is to mark water lines in pool basins and then monitor how these levels fluctuate over the course of several days. If you are having a hard time measuring levels, you can opt for a bucket test instead. This process involves placing a bucket of water next to the pool so the two are exposed to the same conditions. If the water level in the pool drops more than the water in the bucket, it is a sign that there is a leak somewhere in your water system.

Once you have identified that you are dealing with a possible pool leak it is time to track down the problem area. In an above ground pool it is easier to spot issues because structures and plumbing are visible above ground. Inground pools are another story! The main type of pool leaks are structural, plumbing, and due to damaged pool equipment. That is a lot of ground to cover but Puddle technicians have specialized testing procedures to track leaks at the surface and behind the scenes.

Pressure Testing: Plumbing leaks are the most difficult to identify, largely because you can’t always get a visual read on underground pipes. By applying a stream of air flow to water pipes, it is possible to identify leaks. When air comes into contact with a crack or opening where water might escape, it will create a stream of air bubbles. These can be tracked visually, or in the case of an underground leak, saturated soil will produce gurgling sounds that can be tracked.

Dye Testing: A bit of coloured dye can’t help to track down a water leak, can it? Of course it can! In the case of structural leaks or leaks stemming from a torn pool liner, a bit of specialized dye can help to pinpoint problem areas. This process begins by turning off a pool pump and waiting for water to go still. Once settled, coloured dyes are strategically placed inside pool water. Dyes weigh more than water so it will be more readily attracted to the vacuum created by a leak. Technicians will follow the trail left behind directly to the pool leak itself.
