What a Louisville pool cleaning visit covers

A cleaning visit looks after the water, the surfaces and the equipment together. Your technician skims debris off the surface, brushes the walls and steps, vacuums the floor, empties the skimmer and pump baskets, checks the filter and then tests and balances the chemistry. Keeping these jobs on one visit matters because each one undoes the others when they are spread out. You do not need to be home. If the technician can reach the pool and the equipment, the work goes ahead while you are out, so arrange gate access in advance and mention pets or alarms along the route. Every visit ends with a real time E-Report listing what was done, the chemical readings and before and after photos.

Ohio River water with a high starting pH

Louisville Water Company serves Louisville Metro and parts of Bullitt, Hardin, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby and Spencer counties from the Ohio River. Its 2025 Water Quality Report explains that most of the supply is river water treated at the Crescent Hill plant, while the B.E. Payne plant in eastern Jefferson County treats groundwater collected by riverbank filtration. The finished water averaged 128 mg/L of hardness as calcium carbonate, about 7.5 grains per gallon, which the report rates as moderately hard. The same table lists a pH of 8.6 and alkalinity of 76 mg/L.

That pH is the number to watch. Fill water arriving at 8.6 pushes the pool the same way with every top up. Water that runs high tends to leave scale along the tile line and in the equipment. Louisville Water also disinfects with chloramines rather than free chlorine, so fresh water brings combined chlorine into the pool. Your technician tests on every visit rather than assuming the tap water is ready to swim in.

Lexington and southern Indiana start from harder water

Water changes as the territory stretches east and north. Kentucky American Water supplies Lexington from pools 3 and 9 of the Kentucky River plus Jacobson Reservoir, treated at three plants. Its 2025 report gives average hardness of 149 to 161 mg/L leaving those plants, about 9 grains per gallon, but the ranges run from 60 up to 340 mg/L through the year. A Lexington pool can take on noticeably harder water in one month than in another.

Across the river, Indiana American Water's Southern Indiana system serves the Greater Jeffersonville Area from 17 wells in two well fields. Its 2025 report puts hardness at an average of 191 mg/L, ranging from 159 to 241 mg/L, roughly 11.2 grains per gallon. That is hard water, so in Jeffersonville calcium scale is a local consideration as evaporation concentrates minerals over a summer. In these pools your technician watches calcium hardness as closely as pH and sanitizer.

Summer heat and why weekly visits fit

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals at Louisville International put the July average high at 89.0 F, with about 42.7 days a year at or above 90 F. At the McAlpine Locks station on the Ohio River, directly across from Clarksville and New Albany, the count is about 45.6 days. Lexington runs cooler at about 25.1 days. Warm water uses up sanitizer faster and a busy weekend of swimming can move the chemistry within days. That is why most pools in regular use are serviced weekly through the season, while pools used less often or covered for part of the year are often fine every other week. Your technician will suggest an interval based on how you use the pool, the trees above it and where it sits.

Between visits: two habits and one rule

Two habits help between visits: empty the skimmer basket if it fills and run the pump long enough each day to turn the water over. If the water turns cloudy, loses its clarity or smells strongly of chlorine, tell your technician rather than waiting for the next visit. Upkeep also has a safety side. Under the Kentucky Residential Code, an outdoor in ground pool needs a barrier at least 48 inches high. Pedestrian gates must open outward away from the pool and close and latch on their own. In Lexington the city's adoption of the 2021 International Property Maintenance Code goes further on upkeep, requiring pools to be kept clean, sanitary and in good repair. Regular service keeps you on top of the water while you keep the gate latched.

Louisville Pool Cleaning: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Louisville water hard enough to affect my pool or hot tub?

Louisville Water Company's 2025 Water Quality Report puts average hardness at 128 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 7.5 grains per gallon, which it describes as moderately hard. The same table lists a pH of 8.6 and alkalinity of 76 mg/L, so fill water arrives on the high side for pH. That is manageable with regular testing, but in a small hot tub minerals build up quickly as water evaporates and is topped up.

When should I open my pool in Louisville?

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the median last spring freeze on March 31 at Louisville International and April 3 at Bowman Field on the east side. By May the average high at the airport reaches 77.8 F, warm enough for algae to start under the cover. Opening after the last hard freeze protects reassembled equipment, while opening before the water warms makes it easier to clear.

How hard is the water in Lexington?

Kentucky American Water's 2025 report gives average hardness of 149 to 161 mg/L leaving its three plants serving Lexington, about 9 grains per gallon. The ranges are wide, reaching 320 to 340 mg/L at times, so fill water hardness can vary a lot by season. Pools, hot tubs and fountains in Lexington benefit from checking calcium hardness on each visit rather than relying on one reading.

Will I know what was done at each cleaning?

Yes. Every visit ends with a real time E-Report showing what was done, the chemical readings and before and after photos, so you can see the result without being there.

Why is my pool still cloudy right after a cleaning?

Cleaning removes debris and corrects the chemistry, but the filter still needs time to clear fine particles from the water. Slight cloudiness usually settles as the pump runs. If it does not clear, or it gets worse, let your technician know so the filter and chemistry can be checked.
