    • Plumbing Blow-Out

We use high-volume air to clear all underground lines of water, preventing freeze damage in the Louisville off-season.

    • Anti-Freeze & Plugging

Installation of winter plugs and application of non-toxic antifreeze in critical lines to ensure absolute protection against expansion.

    • Winter Chemical Kit

Professional dose of winterizing algaecide and stain inhibitors to keep the water clear until the spring opening.

    • Water Level Drawdown

Lowering the pool level below the tiles or skimmers to prevent water from entering the plumbing during heavy rains or ice expansion.

    • Cover Security Check

We verify all springs, anchors or water bags are perfectly tensioned to withstand the Louisville winter wind and debris without shifting.

    • E-Report & Confirmation

Instant "Happy Snappy" confirmation with time-stamped photos of all lines being winterized and the cover being secured.

    What a pool closing includes

Winter damage is done by water left where it should not be. Water expands as it freezes, which cracks pipes, pumps, filters and heaters, so a closing is mainly about getting water out of the plumbing and equipment and leaving what stays in the pool treated. The visit balances the water and adds winter treatment, lowers the level, blows out the underground lines with high volume air and plugs them, then drains the pump, filter and heater. Non toxic antifreeze goes into critical lines where it is needed as extra protection. Accessories are removed and stored and the cover is fitted. The order matters, which is why it is done as one visit. You get an E-Report with time stamped photos of the lines being winterized and the cover being secured.

First freeze dates: when to book your closing

Close once the season is over and temperatures are falling steadily, but before the first hard freeze. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give these median first fall freeze dates:

    • Lexington Bluegrass Airport: October 28
    • Bowman Field on Louisville's east side: November 3
    • Louisville International: November 7
    • McAlpine Locks, across the river from Clarksville and New Albany: November 9

Lexington's season ends about two weeks earlier than Louisville's, so pools in and around Lexington usually need closing first. Closing too early in warm water invites algae under the cover. October is still mild, with an average high of 70.5 F at Louisville International and 68.6 F in Lexington. Leaving it too late risks the freeze damage a closing exists to prevent.

Lowering the water: where it can go

A pool is never drained completely for winter. Water in the pool helps hold the structure against ground pressure. An empty pool can shift or lift, so the level is lowered rather than emptied. Where discharged water goes is regulated. Louisville MSD asks you not to drain during or within 48 hours after a rain event and to dechlorinate first, letting the pool sit at least 10 days after chemical treatment. The water should test essentially chlorine free with a pH between 6 and 8, then go no faster than 30 gallons per minute to a grassy area large enough to absorb it or a sanitary sewer cleanout on the property, never toward neighboring properties.

In Lexington, the city code exempts pool drainage from its storm system discharge ban only when the water is dechlorinated to less than 1.0 part per million chlorine and does not cause avoidable erosion. Jeffersonville's drainage ordinance requires pool water to go into the storm water system or the ground once pool chemicals are neutralized. Check with your city before draining.

    Winter covers, snow and safety

Louisville averages 13.4 inches of snow and 48.34 inches of precipitation a year. Lexington averages about 14.5 inches of snow. Heavy leaves, snow or standing water on a cover shorten its life and stress its anchors, so clear them where you can do so safely from the edge and never walk on the cover. A safety cover also plays a part in the barrier rules. Under the Kentucky Residential Code, where a house wall forms part of the pool barrier, a powered safety cover meeting ASTM F1346 is one of the accepted protections. Indiana's code likewise accepts a power safety cover that opens only with a key, key and switch or touch pad code. If something looks wrong with the cover over winter, it is better checked than guessed at.

Louisville Pool Closing: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drain my pool in Louisville?

Yes, following Louisville MSD's pool draining guidance. Do not drain during or within 48 hours after rain, dechlorinate first and let the pool sit at least 10 days after chemical treatment, then discharge no faster than 30 gallons per minute to a grassy area large enough to absorb it or a sanitary sewer cleanout on your property. Never direct the water toward neighboring properties. Confirm the details with MSD before draining.

When should I close my pool in Louisville?

Before the first hard freeze. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the median first fall freeze on November 7 at Louisville International and November 3 at Bowman Field. The airport also averages about 74.0 nights a year at or below 32 F, so water left in pool pipes, hot tub plumbing or fountain lines is at risk every winter. October is still mild with an average high of 70.5 F, so closing too early invites algae under the cover.

Where can pool water be drained in Jeffersonville?

Jeffersonville's Wastewater Billing Adjustment Policy points pool owners to the city's drainage ordinance, which requires pool water to be discharged into the storm water system or the ground. Pool chemicals are not to reach surface waters or storm drains, so the water must be neutralized first. A pool drain connected to the city sewer has to be rerouted to a storm sewer before a pool fill credit is granted. Confirm with the city's Wastewater Department before draining.

When should a pool be closed?

Once the season is over and temperatures are consistently falling, but before the first hard freeze. Closing too early in warm water can encourage algae to establish under the cover, while leaving it too late risks the freeze damage the closing exists to prevent.

What does a professional closing include?

Balancing the water and adding winter treatment, lowering the water to the correct level, blowing out and plugging the lines and draining the pump, filter and heater. Accessories are removed and stored and the cover is fitted. The order matters, which is why it is done as one visit.
