What happens at a pool opening

The cover is removed carefully, cleaned and folded so it is ready for next winter. Winter plugs come out, the equipment is reassembled and restarted and the water level is brought back up. The system then runs while the water is tested and balanced, beginning with an opening shock. Water that sat under a cover all winter often holds some algae and debris even after a good closing. The filtration finishes clearing it over the following days, so the pool is usually not swimmable the moment the cover comes off. Any winter damage is reported at the opening rather than found mid season. Before the visit, clear access to the pool and equipment, move anything stored on the cover and make sure the power to the pump and heater is on. You receive a digital report showing the equipment running, with photos and the first water readings.

Last spring freeze dates around the territory

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give the median date of the last 32 F freeze in spring at four stations covering the area:

    • Louisville International, the official station for Louisville: March 31
    • McAlpine Locks on the Ohio River, across from Clarksville and New Albany: March 31
    • Bowman Field on Louisville's east side: April 3
    • Lexington Bluegrass Airport: April 13

A median is a midpoint, so later freezes do happen. Equipment reassembled and full of water ahead of a late hard freeze is exposed, which is why Lexington openings usually make sense a little later than those along the river. Lexington's freeze free season is about two weeks shorter at each end than Louisville's.

Why opening earlier beats opening later

Once daytime temperatures rise consistently, algae starts growing under the cover whether or not the pool is open. NOAA normals put the May average high at 77.8 F at Louisville International, 76.9 F at the McAlpine Locks and 75.8 F in Lexington. A pool opened after algae gets going is more work to clear than one opened before. A green or cloudy start is common when the cover comes off late. Opening ahead of the first swim also leaves time to deal with anything the winter damaged. Louisville averages about 42.7 days a year at or above 90 F, so a pool that is clear and balanced before the heat arrives is far easier to keep that way through the summer.

Refilling after winter: credits and fill water

Most pools need water added at opening because the level was lowered for winter. Louisville Water calls a pool credit on the sewer charge, requested directly from MSD, the preferred way to fill a pool rather than a temporary meter. Only one pool credit is issued per year. In Lexington, sewer fees are based on Kentucky American Water meter readings and each sewer user schedule makes provision for water not discharged to the sewer, naming pool filling. Jeffersonville's Pool Adjustment Request Form asks for pool dimensions, volume and fill dates. New Albany Municipal Utilities considers filling a pool ahead of its Summer Watering Program case by case, with documentation such as proof of pool size.

The fill water itself needs balancing. Louisville Water's finished water averages a pH of 8.6 and carries chloramines rather than free chlorine, so the opening balance accounts for what the hose brings in.

A safety check before the first swim

Spring is a good time to walk the barrier. The Kentucky Residential Code calls for a barrier at least 48 inches high around an outdoor in ground pool, with no more than 4 inches between grade and the bottom, plus pedestrian gates that open outward away from the pool and close and latch on their own. Where a house wall forms part of the barrier, the code requires a powered safety cover, an audible alarm on doors with direct pool access or other approved protection. Indiana's residential code requires every residential pool deeper than 42 inches to have a ring buoy with 40 feet of 1/4 inch line, a pole at least 12 feet long and access to a telephone, which Jeffersonville's Building Commission restates on its pool safety sheet. If a gate no longer latches after winter, have it fixed before anyone swims.

Louisville Pool Opening: Frequently Asked Questions

Does Louisville tap water contain chloramines?

Yes. According to its 2025 Water Quality Report, Louisville Water disinfects with chloramines rather than free chlorine. Its finished water also averages a pH of 8.6. Fresh water added to a pool, hot tub or fountain therefore brings in combined chlorine and a high pH, so it should be tested and balanced after every fill.

What are the pool fence rules in Louisville?

Section R326 of the Kentucky Residential Code requires an outdoor in ground pool to be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches high, with no more than 4 inches between grade and the bottom and no opening that would pass a 4 inch sphere. Pedestrian gates must open outward away from the pool and be self closing and self latching. Pools built completely above grade are exempt from the code. Confirm permit requirements with Louisville Metro before building or changing a fence.

When should I open my pool in Louisville?

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the median last spring freeze on March 31 at Louisville International and April 3 at Bowman Field on the east side. By May the average high at the airport reaches 77.8 F, warm enough for algae to start under the cover. Opening after the last hard freeze protects reassembled equipment, while opening before the water warms makes it easier to clear.

Why does the water look green or cloudy when the cover comes off?

Water that has sat under a cover all winter often has some algae and debris in it, even after a good closing. The opening shock and balancing start clearing it, and the filtration finishes the job over the following days.

Will I get a report after the opening?

Yes. You receive a digital report showing your equipment is running, with photos and the initial water readings.
