Do pools in Panama City need protection from freezing?
Yes. NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals for the Panama City 5N station show about 16.5 nights a year at or below 32 F, mostly in December through February, with a January average low of 42.6 F. Exposed pumps, heaters and plumbing on pools and hot tubs need freeze protection on those nights.
Where does Panama City's pool fill water come from?
According to the City of Panama City's 2025 water quality report, the city buys its water from Bay County Utility Services, which treats surface water from Deer Point Reservoir. Bay County adds lime for pH, zinc orthophosphate for corrosion control and sodium hypochlorite for disinfection. Testing chemistry after a fill or large top up shows what your pool or hot tub needs.
Can I track the water used to fill my pool in Panama City?
Yes. Under Panama City Code Sec. 23-28, the City will install a separate meter for water used only for irrigation or swimming pool purposes. At your request it will also read the meter before and after a pool is filled. Tracking fill water this way also makes an unexplained loss easier to spot.
Will I get a report after the opening?
Yes. You receive a digital report showing your equipment is running, with photos and the initial water readings.
When should a pool be opened for the season?
Earlier than most people expect. Once daytime temperatures rise consistently, algae starts growing under the cover whether the pool is open or not, and a pool opened after that has begun is more work to clear than one opened before. Opening before you intend to swim also leaves time to deal with anything the winter has damaged.
