Saratoga Pool Maintenance
Puddle Pool Services maintains pools in Saratoga and the neighboring cities of Los Gatos, Campbell, Mountain View and Los Altos. Maintenance looks after the pump, filter, heater, valves and plumbing as well as the water chemistry that protects them. Problems are flagged while they are still small and each visit ends with an E-Report.

The equipment behind clear water
Clear water is the visible result of a system you rarely look at. The pump moves the water, the filter strips out what the skimmer misses, the heater holds the temperature and a set of valves and pipes ties it all together. Maintenance visits check that system as well as the chemistry: filter pressure, pump baskets, visible plumbing and valves plus the state of the surface, covers and fittings. Wear shows up gradually. A pool that needs longer to clear after a busy weekend, a pump with a new hum or rattle, pressure that creeps out of its normal band and chemistry that no longer holds steady are all early clues. Tell your technician when you spot one, because a worn seal or tired motor is far cheaper to deal with before it fails.
Turnover and pump run time
Campbell's building code puts a number on something every pool owner should think about. Section 18.24.030 requires private pools to have filtration and recirculation that achieve a full turnover of the water in 24 hours or less. Turnover simply means pushing the whole volume of the pool through the filter. How many hours that takes depends on the size of the pool and the capacity of the pump, which is why no single run time suits every yard. Run the pump too little and the water clouds no matter how well it is treated. Run it far longer than needed and you mostly pay for electricity. Your technician can work out a sensible schedule for your pump, then adjust it as the weather changes and the pool sees more or less use.
Cleaning filters without polluting the creeks
Filters need regular cleaning and the water that comes out of them carries whatever they trapped. The Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program's guidance on draining pools and spas is specific about it: never clean a filter in the street or a storm drain, rinse cartridge filters onto a dirt area and backwash sand and diatomaceous earth filters onto a dirt area too. Storm drains in the county carry water to creeks and the Bay without treatment. Mountain View's code names swimming pools, spas and fountains among unlawful storm drain discharges unless a permit or exemption applies and Los Altos makes it unlawful to send pool or spa water to the storm drain. Where your filter is rinsed or backwashed is worth settling before the next cleaning, so debris and residue stay out of the gutter.
Chemistry that protects metal and heaters
Water that drifts too low in alkalinity or pH turns corrosive to metal parts, heaters and fittings, while water that runs high tends to deposit scale. Local supplies pull in both directions. Cal Water's 2025 report for its Los Altos Suburban District lists total alkalinity of only 65 to 71 mg/L, averaging 68, in the Valley Water supply, against 210 to 340 mg/L in its groundwater. Calcium in that groundwater ranged from 35 to 120 mg/L. In Saratoga, Los Gatos and Campbell, San Jose Water reports a distribution total chlorine running annual average of 1.42 mg/L and notes that chloramine and chlorine may both be present. Because a pool can be topped up with water of quite different character from one season to the next, chemistry is tested and corrected on every visit with the equipment in mind.
Maintenance through the wet months
Service usually follows the seasons. Visits are heavier while the pool is in daily use and lighter once it quiets down and some equipment jobs are easier to schedule when nobody is swimming. Rainfall varies across a short distance. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give the Los Gatos station about 22.19 inches a year, while the San Jose airport station used for Campbell averages 13.48 inches and Palo Alto, the station used for Los Altos, 15.12 inches. A pool that goes unused through winter still needs one of two things: regular maintenance or a proper closing. Untreated standing water is much harder to recover in spring than water that was kept balanced and equipment that sits idle without being run or shut down correctly is where faults build up unseen.
Saratoga Pool Maintenance: Frequently Asked Questions
Where should pool filter backwash go in Saratoga?
Not into the street. The Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program's guidance on draining pools and spas says never to clean a filter in the street or a storm drain. It recommends rinsing cartridge filters and backwashing sand and diatomaceous earth filters onto a dirt area, since storm drains flow to creeks and the Bay without treatment.
Which Saratoga neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Saratoga, including Saratoga Village, Saratoga Oaks, Fruitvale Avenue Corridor, The Golden Triangle, Saratoga Woods and Bellgrove Circle and Kentfield. The full list of areas is on our Saratoga page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
How long should the pump run each day?
Long enough to turn over the pool's full volume, which depends on the size of the pool and the capacity of the pump rather than on a single rule. Running it too little is the most common cause of water that will not stay clear, while running it longer than needed mainly costs electricity. Your technician can tell you what is right for your setup.
Is maintenance still needed if the pool is not being used?
Yes. Standing, untreated water is more work to recover than water that has been kept balanced, and equipment that sits idle without being run or properly shut down is where problems develop quietly. A pool that is out of use either needs maintaining or needs closing properly.
Can maintenance be scheduled around the season?
Yes, and most customers do. Service is usually heavier through the swimming season and lighter outside it, and some equipment work is better done when the pool is not in use. It is worth discussing the pattern rather than assuming one schedule fits the whole year.
