What a pool cleaning visit covers
A standard visit looks after the water, the surfaces and the equipment in one pass. Your technician skims debris from the surface, brushes the walls and steps, vacuums the floor, empties the skimmer and pump baskets, checks the filter and then tests and balances the water chemistry. Doing all of it on the same visit matters because these jobs undo each other when they are done separately. You do not need to be home. As long as the technician can reach the pool and the equipment, service goes ahead while you are out, so arrange gate access and tell us about pets or alarms on the route to the pool. Every visit ends with an E-Report showing what was done, the chemical readings and before and after photos.
Lake Michigan water and what it means for your pool
Chicago draws its water from Lake Michigan through offshore cribs. The Jardine Water Purification Plant serves the northern parts of the city, which covers the north and northwest side neighborhoods we serve. In the Department of Water Management's 2025 Comprehensive Chemical Analysis, treated and distribution samples measured 126 to 143 mg/L of hardness as calcium carbonate, about 7.4 to 8.4 grains per gallon. That is moderately hard water. The same lab sheets show a pH of 7.7 to 7.9 and a total alkalinity of about 100 mg/L. As delivered the water is slightly undersaturated, so it does not lay down scale straight from the tap.
Most north shore towns treat their own lake water. Wilmette's plant reported an average of 139 mg/L in 2025 and also supplies Glenview, where the village report gives 142 mg/L. Highland Park lists 140 ppm and Lake Forest gives 130 mg/L. Skokie buys water treated at Evanston's plant, which averaged 134 mg/L. Similar is not identical, which is why your technician tests your own water on every visit instead of assuming a number.
Barrington well water is a different starting point
Barrington water comes from a very different source. The village does not use Lake Michigan water. It pumps groundwater from four wells in sand and gravel and limestone aquifers. The same system serves portions of Inverness and Barrington Hills. According to the village FAQ, hardness is about 25 grains per gallon, roughly 400 mg/L as calcium carbonate. That is about three times the lake water figures to the east.
Fill water that hard brings a lot of calcium into the pool from the first top up. As water evaporates over a summer the minerals stay behind and the calcium level climbs. Left unchecked, that shows up as scale along the tile line, rough surfaces and deposits in the heater and filter. No village source says the public supply is softened, so balancing a Barrington pool means watching calcium hardness as closely as pH and sanitizer.
Summer in the city: why weekly service fits
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals at O'Hare put the July average high at 84.5 F, with about 16.7 days a year at or above 90 F. Warm water uses up sanitizer faster. A busy weekend of swimming can shift the chemistry within days. That is why most pools in regular use are serviced weekly through the season, while pools used less often can often go every other week. Conditions vary inside the territory. The Chicago Botanic Garden station in Glencoe, used for the north shore, averages a July high of 83.5 F. The Barrington station averages only about 6.3 days a year at or above 90 F. Your technician will recommend a schedule based on how much the pool is used, the tree cover above it and where it sits.
Between visits: pump time and local pool rules
Two habits help between visits: empty the skimmer basket if it fills and run the pump long enough each day to turn the water over. For plan based residential pools, Chicago's Department of Buildings guidance calls for a recirculation system that turns over the full volume every six hours, which shows how much circulation matters to clear water. Some suburbs write upkeep into their codes as well. Winnetka requires owners to keep pools and spas clean and sanitary at all times. Glenview's pool code expects owners to keep a test kit covering disinfectant, alkalinity, cyanuric acid, hardness and pH. If the water turns cloudy or smells strongly of chlorine, tell your technician rather than waiting for the next visit. Regular service is the simplest way to stay on top of both.
Chicago Pool Cleaning: Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chicago water hard enough to affect my pool or hot tub?
Chicago's Lake Michigan water is moderately hard. The Department of Water Management's 2025 Comprehensive Chemical Analysis measured 126 to 143 mg/L of hardness as calcium carbonate across treated and distribution samples, about 7.4 to 8.4 grains per gallon. That is manageable with regular testing, but in a small hot tub the minerals build up as water evaporates and is topped up, so hardness is worth checking alongside pH and sanitizer.
When should I open my pool in Chicago?
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals at O'Hare put the median last spring freeze on April 16, with the May average high reaching 70.5 F. Opening after the last hard freeze protects reassembled equipment, while opening before algae gets going under the cover makes the water easier to clear. North shore suburbs run later: the Chicago Botanic Garden station in Glencoe has a median last freeze of April 26.
Why is Barrington water harder on pools and hot tubs?
Barrington does not use Lake Michigan water. The village pumps groundwater from four wells. Its FAQ puts hardness at 25 grains per gallon, about 400 mg/L as calcium carbonate. Fill water that hard brings a lot of calcium into a pool, hot tub or fountain, so scale and balance need closer attention than with lake water.
What is included in a pool cleaning visit?
A standard visit covers the water, the surfaces and the equipment: skimming debris from the surface, brushing walls and steps, vacuuming the floor, emptying skimmer and pump baskets, checking the filter and testing and balancing the water chemistry. Doing all of it on one visit matters because these jobs undo each other if they are done separately.
Do I need to be home during the service?
No. As long as the technician can reach the pool and the equipment, service is usually carried out while nobody is home, which is how most regular customers prefer it. Arrange access to gates or side entrances in advance, and let us know about pets, alarms or anything else on the route to the pool.
