Keeping your pool running smoothly takes a lot more than a skimming every now and then.

Fountains and features we look after

Water feature maintenance covers fountains and features indoors and out, from residential pieces to large commercial fountains in places like hotels and shopping malls, as well as waterfalls, spillways and other features built into a pool. Each one gets a treatment plan suited to its size, age and materials. A visit balances the water chemistry, removes debris and stains and inspects the circulation and filtration system, working top to bottom so a clog in one part does not undo the cleaning everywhere else. Natural stone, liners and features with LED lighting or other delicate parts each need a different approach. The method is matched to the materials. Features built into a pool share its water and circulation, so they are looked after as part of the pool.

Phosphate in the tap water and algae

Fountains lose water to splash and evaporation, so they are topped up often. Every top up brings in whatever the tap water carries. Chicago adds orthophosphate to its water for corrosion control, a step its water quality report ties to minimizing lead leaching. That is worth knowing because phosphate feeds algae. Several suburban suppliers do something similar: Wilmette adds poly orthophosphate after treatment, Highland Park adds orthophosphate for corrosion control and Barrington adds phosphates to its well water. A shallow fountain in summer sun, with nutrients arriving at every refill, is an easy place for algae to start. Balanced water, a working circulation system and regular debris removal are what keep it clear, which is why a feature needs treatment even when nobody swims in it.

    Hard water, stone and staining

Evaporation leaves minerals behind. A fountain loses a lot of water for its size, so hardness can build up quickly. The city's 2025 lab analysis put Chicago's lake water at 126 to 143 mg/L, which is moderately hard. Lake Forest gives 130 mg/L for its lake water. Barrington's well water is far harder: the village FAQ gives about 25 grains per gallon. On natural stone, spillways and splash zones that hardness shows up as white scale and staining that is hard to shift once it sets. Removing it needs the right method for the material, because a heavy handed clean can do real damage to stone and delicate finishes. Regular visits catch the buildup while it is still light.

Permits and water rules for features

Small features often need no building permit, but the thresholds differ by town. Chicago's Department of Buildings guidance says pools and water features 48 inches deep or less on lots with 1 to 3 dwelling units need no building permit if they sit at or in the ground, with excavation no deeper than 5 feet and no more than 5,000 gallons at 90 percent full. Winnetka requires a permit for pools or similar water features deeper than 18 inches at any point. Summer water rules can reach features too. Park Ridge's summer outdoor water use rules run May 15 through September 15 on an even and odd address basis and define outdoor use to include recycling of water in pools and fountains. The published text is hard to read online, so check the exact days with Park Ridge Public Works.

Shutting a feature down before the first freeze

Outdoor fountains hold water in pumps, lines and basins. When that water freezes it can crack them just as it cracks pool plumbing. NOAA normals put the median first fall freeze on October 28 at O'Hare, October 21 at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe and October 19 near Barrington. Spring comes later on the north shore as well, with a median last freeze of April 26 at Glencoe compared with April 16 at O'Hare. Plan the shutdown ahead of those fall dates and the restart after the spring ones. Talk to your technician about draining and protecting the pump and lines for winter. Indoor features are not exposed to freezing, so they can be serviced on a schedule that suits their use and location.

Chicago Water Feature Maintenance: Frequently Asked Questions

When should I close my pool in Chicago?

Close once the season is over and temperatures are falling, but before the first hard freeze. At O'Hare, NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the median first fall freeze on October 28 and the October average high at 62.7 F. On the north shore the Glencoe station's median is October 21, so plan a little earlier there. Pools, outdoor water features and hot tubs you do not plan to use should be closed or shut down before then.

Why is Barrington water harder on pools and hot tubs?

Barrington does not use Lake Michigan water. The village pumps groundwater from four wells. Its FAQ puts hardness at 25 grains per gallon, about 400 mg/L as calcium carbonate. Fill water that hard brings a lot of calcium into a pool, hot tub or fountain, so scale and balance need closer attention than with lake water.

Does Chicago tap water contain phosphate?

Yes. Chicago adds orthophosphate to its treated water for corrosion control, which the city's water quality report describes as minimizing lead leaching. Phosphate feeds algae, so pools and fountains topped up with tap water take in a little every time. Steady sanitizer levels and regular cleaning keep that from turning into an algae problem.

What does a water feature maintenance visit include?

Balancing the water chemistry, removing debris and stains and inspecting the circulation and filtration system. We work top to bottom so a clog in one part does not undo the cleaning everywhere else.

Can you clean natural stone and delicate features?

Yes, with the right method. Natural stone, liners and features with LED lighting or other delicate parts each need a different approach, and a heavy handed clean can do real damage. We match the method to the materials.
