Pool and hot tub repairs we handle

Repair work covers pumps and motors, heaters, filters, plumbing, vinyl liner patches and leaks on pools and on hot tubs, which share many of the same components. Every job starts with a diagnosis of the actual cause so the right part gets fixed. Warning signs worth a call include water that will not stay clear or balanced, unusual noise from the pump, pressure readings outside the normal range, water loss faster than evaporation and equipment that trips or will not start. After the diagnosis you get an explanation of what is wrong and a quote, so you can decide before any work begins. Where a leak is part of the problem, leak detection testing finds where the water is escaping so the repair targets the right place.

What a northern Illinois winter does to equipment

Freeze damage is the repair most closely tied to this climate. At O'Hare the January average high is 31.6 F, so the average January afternoon stays below freezing. Farther north, the Waukegan station used for Lake Forest counts about 133.4 nights a year at or below 32 F, with a January average high of 29.8 F. Water expands as it freezes, which is what cracks pipes, pumps, filters and heaters when a pool is not closed properly. That damage often stays hidden until spring, when the equipment is reassembled and started at opening. Any damage found then is reported at that point, so repairs can be planned before the swimming season instead of discovered in the middle of it.

Heaters, pumps and the water running through them

A heater that stops heating can fail for many reasons, from controls and sensors to ignition and flow problems, so the technician checks the heater and the water flow to it before recommending a repair or a replacement. Water chemistry plays a part in how long this equipment lasts. Chicago's Lake Michigan water arrives slightly undersaturated, meaning it does not lay down scale from the tap, while water that drifts too low in alkalinity or pH becomes corrosive to heaters and metal fittings. Barrington is the opposite case. The village puts its well water at about 25 grains per gallon, so scale in heaters and on hot surfaces is the bigger concern there. For pumps, a worn part can often be replaced, but an older pump may be worth upgrading, since a variable speed pump uses less energy by running at lower flow when full power is not needed.

Moving or adding equipment: local setbacks

When a repair turns into a replacement or a relocation, the new equipment has to meet local siting rules. Chicago's Department of Buildings guidance keeps pool edges and pump, filter or treatment equipment at least 10 feet from any neighboring lot. Skokie requires pools and their pumps, filters and disinfection equipment to sit at least 8 feet from side and rear lot lines. Park Ridge uses the same 8 foot distance for any part of a pool or its equipment. Wilmette's zoning code sets pumping and filtering equipment 15 feet from any lot line. Highland Park does not allow pool equipment to encroach into a required side yard. These rules come from each village, so confirm the details with your building department before equipment is moved.

    Liner patches and bigger projects

Small tears and punctures in a vinyl liner can usually be patched, which stops water loss and protects the structure behind the liner. Larger damage or an aging liner may call for replacement. A technician can tell you which makes sense. If you are planning bigger changes, check the code your village has adopted, because the details differ. Northbrook adopted the 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code in October 2025 and raised the barrier height to 60 inches. Park Ridge requires a 5 foot barrier around in ground pools. Chicago's guidance calls for a 5 foot enclosure with self closing, self latching gates and grounded metal fences. Wilmette adds a hard, slip resistant walk at least four feet wide around most pools. Hinsdale requires at least 5 feet between a pool and any building foundation, retaining wall or masonry fence.

Chicago Pool & Hot Tub Repairs: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drain my pool into the sewer in Chicago?

Yes, but the Department of Buildings guidance on residential swimming pools sets the method. The pool must drain to the sewer system through an indirect connection at no more than 250 gallons per minute. It must not discharge to the sewer during a rainstorm. Confirm the details with the Department of Buildings before draining.

What are the pool fence rules in Chicago?

Under the Department of Buildings guidance, a private residential pool (deeper than 48 inches on a lot with 1 to 3 dwelling units) must be completely enclosed by a fence or wall at least 5 feet high, gates included. Gates need self closing and self latching hardware mounted out of reach of small children. Metal fences must be electrically grounded. Check with the Department of Buildings before changing the fence around your pool.

Which Chicago neighborhoods do you cover?

We look after pools across Chicago, including Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Uptown, Edgewater, Rogers Park and North Center. The full list of areas is on our Chicago page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.

Do you repair hot tubs too?

Yes. Hot tubs share many of the same components as pools, including pumps, heaters and plumbing, and they are diagnosed and repaired the same way.

What happens if a leak is part of the problem?

Leak detection testing finds where the water is escaping, in the structure or the plumbing, so the repair targets the right place instead of guessing.
