How Leak Detection Works in West Vancouver

There is no better place for a swim than your own backyard. For homeowners and business owners in the West Vancouver area, having an accessible swim space is key to making the most not only of the summer months but the rest of the year as well! Swimming pool leaks are enough to bring your summer fun to a halt or cause damage at any time of year. If you begin to experience water loss and suspect a leak, don’t hesitate to call a Puddle technician. West Vancouver pool leak detection services identify the causes of water loss, isolate problem areas and provide insight into how to treat issues.

It is common to lose several inches of water in a swimming pool but this occurs over the course of a week. If you find yourself needing to refill water levels on a daily basis, or are losing more than 5 inches of water within a week, it is time to consider that you are probably dealing with water leaks. For every minute that a leak is allowed to persist you are losing water and this water needs somewhere to go! If left untreated, saturated soils will shift, putting additional weight and strain on structures, while water itself can creep into surrounding structures causing leaks, rot, water damage, mold and, in serious cases, flooding.

Pool Leak Detection: How to Get the Best Results For Homes & Businesses

It is important to note that there are many areas of your pool that are prone to leaks. This might be cracked concrete from physical trauma, torn pool liners, aged equipment or root damage. No matter what caused the leak, water loss is a huge threat to properties of all types, shapes and sizes.

Local pool experts understand the major obstacles facing swimming pools in the West Vancouver area. Instead of struggling with trial and error or an amateur approach, deal with water loss quickly and directly with a bit of help from a Puddle technician.

Plumbing Leaks: Having to find a leak inside plumbing systems can be tough because plumbing often happens behind the scenes. This type of leak often results in underground leaks and drowned soil. The way to locate a plumbing leak is with a pressure test. These tests involve using a pressurized stream of air applied to plumbing and return lines. If there are leaks in the lines it will create air bubbles and in the case of underground leaks there will be gurgling sounds coming up from saturated soil. Noises can be tracked using specialized listening equipment, so there is no leak too small for our technicians to find!

Structural Leaks: When seeking out structural leaks it is better to have a dye test done by a professional. This type of test involves turning off the pool pump so water sits still. From there, coloured dyes are applied strategically in pool basins. A leak will suck up water and because dyes weigh more than water, they will be attracted to the leak. This creates a colourful trail that can help to locate the leak.

Faulty Equipment: As pool equipment gets old, it is vulnerable to corrosion. If the components of your water system are leaking it might mean a simple fix like tightening a screw or it could mean having to replace a component. These types of leaks are often easy to identify because you will see pooling water and drips.

West Vancouver Leak Detection: Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I drain my pool or hot tub in West Vancouver?

The District says draining pools and hot tubs into a watercourse system is strictly prohibited, because storm drains here discharge to creeks. Pool, hot tub and other chlorinated water should go to the sanitary sewer within the Schedule E limits of Sewerage and Drainage Regulation Bylaw 5263 (for example pH 5.5 to 10.5). The District also advises against draining onto lawns because of flooding risk to neighbours. Building Bylaw 5340 also requires pool drains to connect to the sanitary sewer, so confirm with the District before draining.

Can I fill my pool during water restrictions in West Vancouver?

Metro Vancouver's Drinking Water Conservation Plan applies region wide, with Stage 1 running automatically from May 1 to October 15. Stages 1 and 2 have no impact on residential pools and hot tubs, while Stage 3 prohibits filling or topping them up; non residential pools are exempt only with a health authority operating permit. The stage rules apply to properties on Metro Vancouver water, so confirm with the District which rules cover your supply before a fill.

How do you find a pool leak?

We test the pool in stages rather than guessing. Pressure testing tells us whether the plumbing lines are holding, and dye testing shows where water is escaping at fittings, cracks, lights, skimmers and returns. Checking both the structure and the plumbing matters, because a pool can leak from more than one place.

Is leak detection invasive? Will you need to dig up my yard?

Detection itself is non invasive. Pressure and dye testing are done from the pool and the equipment, without digging. Excavation only comes into the conversation if a leak is confirmed in an underground line, and then the testing tells us where to open up rather than searching blindly.

What happens if you find a leak?

We show you where it is and explain the repair options. Many leaks at fittings, skimmers, lights or small cracks can be repaired directly. Larger structural or underground plumbing repairs are quoted separately so you can decide with the full picture.

    a ztarknap ★★★★★

Very helpful and efficient service. They did a change out of the sand for our sand filter, and even when they had to do a bit extra labour as not everything was as expected with the inside of the filter chamber, we were still invoiced the original quoted amount which was really decent! Mike and Ciara were pleasant and cheerful to deal with, and gave helpful advice to get our cloudy pool water back to sparkling. Really great team!
