Yes, very soft. The District of West Vancouver's 2024 Drinking Water Quality Annual Report shows three supplies: Eagle Lake source water at 3 to 4.6 mg/L hardness, Montizambert Creek at 4.8 to 6.9 mg/L and treated Metro Vancouver water averaging about 22.3 to 22.4 mg/L. All are well under 1.5 grains per gallon, so calcium hardness usually needs raising after filling a pool or hot tub.
Why does my West Vancouver neighbourhood affect pool water balance?
Eagle Lake water serves areas below the Upper Levels Highway west of 29th Street and above the Upper Levels Highway east to the Chartwell neighbourhood, while Montizambert Creek serves Sunset Highlands north of Horseshoe Bay. Source alkalinity there is only 2.5 to 4.5 mg/L (Eagle Lake) and 2.1 to 2.5 mg/L (Montizambert), against about 21 mg/L for treated Metro Vancouver water. Pools filled in these areas need more calcium hardness and alkalinity adjustment than elsewhere in the District.
Where can I drain my pool or hot tub in West Vancouver?
The District says draining pools and hot tubs into a watercourse system is strictly prohibited, because storm drains here discharge to creeks. Pool, hot tub and other chlorinated water should go to the sanitary sewer within the Schedule E limits of Sewerage and Drainage Regulation Bylaw 5263 (for example pH 5.5 to 10.5). The District also advises against draining onto lawns because of flooding risk to neighbours. Building Bylaw 5340 also requires pool drains to connect to the sanitary sewer, so confirm with the District before draining.
How long should the pump run each day?
Long enough to turn over the pool's full volume, which depends on the size of the pool and the capacity of the pump rather than on a single rule. Running it too little is the most common cause of water that will not stay clear, while running it longer than needed mainly costs electricity. Your technician can tell you what is right for your setup.
Is maintenance still needed if the pool is not being used?
Yes. Standing, untreated water is more work to recover than water that has been kept balanced, and equipment that sits idle without being run or properly shut down is where problems develop quietly. A pool that is out of use either needs maintaining or needs closing properly.

They did a change out of the sand for our sand filter, and even when they had to do a bit extra labour as not everything was as expected with the inside of the filter chamber, we were still invoiced the original quoted amount which was really decent! Mike and Ciara were pleasant and cheerful to deal with, and gave helpful advice to get our cloudy pool water back to sparkling. Really great team!
