Bather load sets the schedule
The biggest difference between a commercial pool and a backyard one is how many people use it. A pool shared by dozens of swimmers a day burns through sanitizer faster, works the filter harder and drifts out of balance sooner, so commercial pools are serviced on a shorter cycle and watched between visits. A busy hotel or fitness facility pool may need daily attention to water chemistry with scheduled service visits on top, and the right interval depends on your traffic and the requirements that apply where you operate. Commercial spas face the same pressure in a much smaller volume of hot water, so their chemistry moves even faster. They can be serviced alongside the pool on the same plan, and the work is carried out by CPO certified technicians.
Facilities we work with and when we visit
Commercial work covers hotels and hospitality, fitness centers and health clubs, homeowners associations, apartment and condo communities, schools and community facilities. Each has its own pattern of use and its own access limits, which is why quotes are based on the facility rather than on pool size alone. Closing a pool to guests or members at peak times is costly, so service is usually scheduled outside opening hours. Raise it when you ask for a quote and it becomes part of the plan. Managers get an E-Report after every visit showing what was done, the water readings and photos, which gives you a record without anyone needing to be on site. If the water looks wrong between visits, with cloudiness, a strong chemical smell or new equipment noise, call your local team rather than waiting.
Draining and backwash at a larger site
Commercial pools move a lot of water when they are drained or backwashed, and the rules come from each municipality. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District's sewage and watershed ordinances contain no swimming pool water provision, which leaves the detail to the villages. Hinsdale's amended pool code sends drainage to the storm sewer where one is available and otherwise to the sanitary sewer at no more than 10 gallons per square foot of filter area, never while it is raining, and public and semiprivate pools need the enforcing officer's approval. Northbrook routes filter backwash wastes through a settling pit into the sanitary sewer by indirect discharge. Arlington Heights lets pool water into the storm drainage system only once it is dechlorinated, which its code describes as typically less than one ppm chlorine. Confirm the method with the municipality before any large discharge.
Bulk water, hydrants and big fills
Filling or refilling a large pool can stretch beyond what a garden hose supplies, and several villages control how bulk water is drawn. Barrington requires anyone buying water in bulk for nondomestic uses such as swimming pools to apply for a temporary hookup, and its code bars using a construction water service to fill a pool. Northbrook prohibits taking water from any hydrant without Public Works permission, and hydrant water drawn for anything other than firefighting has to be metered and protected against backflow. Chicago's municipal code likewise bars opening a hydrant or holding a hydrant key without permission from the Commissioner of Water Management. Planning the fill with the village well ahead helps the season start without a scramble.
Working within health and code requirements
Commercial pools are regulated, and requirements for testing frequency, record keeping and water quality vary by state and municipality. Your local team can explain how service is documented to support the requirements that apply to your facility, but the requirements themselves should always be confirmed with your own local authority. Oversight reaches private pools as well. Inside Chicago, the Department of Buildings guidance requires chlorine based disinfection for plan based residential pools and says other methods need written approval from the Chicago Department of Public Health. Highland Park's pool code points flood hazard provisions to the Lake County Watershed Development Ordinance, and work in a floodplain, wetland, ravine or bluff there needs Public Works Engineering review. Raising points like these early helps a renovation or a new season begin without surprises.
Chicago Commercial Pool Services: Frequently Asked Questions
How can a pool be drained in Hinsdale?
Hinsdale's amended pool code sends drainage to the storm sewer where one is available and otherwise to the sanitary sewer at no more than 10 gallons per square foot of filter area. Draining is not allowed while it is raining, and public and semiprivate pools need the enforcing officer's approval first. Confirm the method with the Village before draining a residential or commercial pool.
Does a new pool in Hinsdale need an inspection before it is used?
Yes. Hinsdale's amendments to the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code say no pool may be used until it passes final inspection and a certificate of use is issued. If you are buying a Hinsdale home with a pool or reopening a pool at a commercial property, ask for that certificate. Check with the Village if you cannot find a record of it.
Which Chicago neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Chicago, including Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Uptown, Edgewater, Rogers Park and North Center. The full list of areas is on our Chicago page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Can service be scheduled outside opening hours?
Usually, and for most commercial facilities it is the practical option, since closing a pool to guests or members at peak times is costly. Raise it when you ask for a quote so it can be built into the service plan.
What kinds of facilities do you service?
Commercial work covers hotels and hospitality, fitness centers and health clubs, homeowners associations, apartment and condo communities, schools and community facilities. Each has different usage patterns and access limits, which is why commercial quotes are based on the facility rather than on pool size alone.
