A service plan built around your backyard
Home pool service keeps the water balanced, clears debris, cleans the filters and scrubs away residue and stains, while looking after the liner, covers and equipment as part of the routine. It applies to indoor and outdoor pools and to hot tubs, which can share the same visit and the same plan. Plans come in tiers, so the schedule and scope can match how often the family swims and how much attention the pool needs. Your local team recommends a starting point after looking at the pool, the equipment and the yard around it. The teams are locally owned and operated, so the people caring for your pool work in your part of the city and suburbs. After each visit an E-Report lists what was done, the chemical readings and before and after photos.
Starting fresh with a deep clean
Not every pool starts from a good place. A pool that sat untreated, changed hands with a house sale or was simply neglected for a summer usually needs a deep clean before routine service makes sense. Options cover one time deep cleans as well as regular service, so a tired pool can be brought back on track and a healthy one kept that way. Service can also continue through the year, adjusted to the season, so the pool stays protected in the months it gets little use. Balanced water matters throughout. A shift in alkalinity or pH can turn the water corrosive to equipment or leave scale and staining, which leads to repairs that regular balancing avoids.
House rules that come with a home pool
Owning a pool here comes with a few local rules beyond the fence. Park Ridge requires a 10 foot pole and a throwing rope with a ring buoy at every residential pool, and its code bars residential pool use between 10:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Skokie sets quiet hours too, with no pool use from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday and from 12:01 a.m. to 7 a.m. Friday through Sunday and on holidays. Inside Chicago, the Department of Buildings guidance for private residential pools calls for a skilled swimmer to be present whenever the pool is in use, along with a ring buoy with rope and a reach pole. These rules belong to each municipality, so check your own before the first party of the summer.
Wading pools and standing water
Smaller pools have their own rules. Skokie exempts wading pools under 2 feet deep or 500 gallons from most of its pool code, but they must sit in a rear or side yard and be drained after each use. A July 2026 Village post on West Nile virus asked residents to drain and store children's pools when they are not in use and to empty standing water weekly. The same post noted that the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District offers free property inspections. Standing water on a winter or safety cover is worth clearing too, where you can do it safely from the edge and without ever walking on the cover, since sustained weight shortens a cover's life and stresses its anchors.
Lake water from different plants
Most homes in the territory fill from Lake Michigan, but that water is not all treated the same way. Northbrook's 2025 water report describes the village as the only community in the Chicago area that draws directly from the lake and treats the water at an inland plant, pumping it 2.9 miles from its lakefront station in Glencoe. Highland Park and Lake Forest both run ultrafiltration membrane plants, and Highland Park's plant also supplies Deerfield, Lincolnshire and Bannockburn. Skokie buys water treated at Evanston's plant, while Park Ridge buys all of its water from Chicago. Different plants mean slightly different chemistry, so your technician tests the water in your own pool rather than relying on a neighbor's numbers.
Chicago Residential Pool Services: Frequently Asked Questions
How high does a pool fence need to be in Northbrook?
Northbrook adopted the 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code by an ordinance passed on October 28, 2025 and raised the barrier height from 48 inches to 60 inches above grade, measured on the side facing away from the pool. The village code also requires gates to stay locked whenever the pool is not attended by a responsible swimmer. A pool inspection checks your barrier against these rules, but confirm the details with the Village before changing a fence.
Does Lake Forest require a particular type of pool filter?
Yes. Lake Forest's swimming pool code calls for sand filters on residential pools at properties served by the public sanitary sewer and cartridge filters on residential spas and hot tubs. It also makes the owner responsible for treating the water with approved chemicals and keeping a test kit. Check with the City before replacing filter equipment.
