Why a public pool runs on a shorter cycle
Bather load is what separates a commercial pool from a home pool. Each swimmer burns through sanitizer, hands the filter more to catch and pushes the chemistry a little further off target. Multiply that by dozens of people a day and a hotel or apartment pool drifts in hours where a backyard pool drifts in days. So the visit interval follows traffic, not the calendar, and the water is watched between visits too. At a busy fitness center that can mean daily chemistry checks layered under the scheduled service. Paperwork matters as much as the water. Each visit produces an E-Report with the work, the readings and photos, so a property manager in an office across town still has a dated record of every service.
Three water supplies in one territory
A management company with properties on both sides of the Ohio River is dealing with different fill water at each site. Louisville Water and Kentucky American Water, which serves Lexington, both disinfect with chloramines. Their 2025 reports give distribution averages of 2.69 ppm, ranging from 1.97 to 3.46, and 2.82 ppm, ranging from 0.75 to 4.15. Indiana American Water says its groundwater supplies, including the system serving the Greater Jeffersonville Area, are generally disinfected with chlorine instead, at a 2025 average of 1.35 ppm within 0.46 to 1.95. A commercial pool takes on a lot of make up water through splash out, backwashing and evaporation, so the chemistry of that water matters. Readings at each property are taken on site, never borrowed from a building across the river.
Peak traffic in the summer heat
Summer is when outdoor commercial pools carry their heaviest load, and hot weather makes that load harder to manage because heat speeds up sanitizer loss. Bowman Field on Louisville's east side logs about 38.1 days of 90 F or hotter in NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, against 42.7 at the airport and 45.6 down on the river at the McAlpine Locks. Lexington is milder, with a July average high of 86.9 F and about 25.1 days at 90 F or above, but a busy community pool there still faces the same daily pressure from swimmers. Visits can usually be booked before the pool opens or after it shuts for the day, so residents and members are not turned away at busy times. Mention your hours when you request a quote.
Draining a large pool in Lexington and Louisville
Partial and full drains for repairs on a commercial pool move far more water than a backyard pool, so the discharge rules carry more weight. In Lexington, Section 16-93 of the city code allows pool drainage to the storm system only once the water is dechlorinated below 1.0 part per million and does not cause avoidable erosion. Section 16-42 bars storm water, surface water and other unpolluted drainage from the sanitary sewer. Pool water is not named there, so confirm with LFUCG Water Quality before sending any to a cleanout. Louisville MSD's guidance limits discharge to 30 gallons per minute, which turns a large drain into a planned job. Statewide, 401 KAR 4:220 requires county water supply plans to include water shortage response plans where drought could leave supply short, worth knowing before you refill a large pool.
Regulations, spas and calls between visits
Public and semi public pools are regulated, and testing frequency, record keeping and water quality rules change from state to state and town to town. A property in Clarksville and one in Shelbyville answer to different authorities, so check the rules for each site with its own local authority, then ask your local team how the visit records line up with them. A spa at a hotel or club holds little water and sees a lot of bathers, so its chemistry swings fast. It can sit on the same service plan as the main pool. If something seems off between visits, such as hazy water, a sharp chemical odor or a pump making a new noise, phone your local team rather than holding out for the next scheduled stop. With public swimmers involved, an early look is always the safer call.
Louisville Commercial Pool Services: Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jeffersonville tap water disinfected the same way as Louisville's?
No. Louisville Water uses chloramines, but Indiana American Water treats groundwater systems like the Greater Jeffersonville Area supply with chlorine in most cases. Its 2025 report puts the Southern Indiana distribution system at 1.35 ppm on average, varying between 0.46 and 1.95 ppm. Fill water on the Indiana side therefore behaves differently in a pool, which is one more reason to test each pool on its own.
Can I drain pool water into the sanitary sewer in Lexington?
Ask the city before you do. Lexington's sanitary sewer rule, Code Section 16-42, keeps out unpolluted drainage such as storm and surface water but says nothing specific about pools. The storm system is the route the code does address: Section 16-93 permits pool water there once chlorine is under 1.0 part per million and no avoidable erosion results. LFUCG Water Quality can tell you which route fits your pool.
Which Louisville neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Louisville, including Downtown, NuLu (East Market District), Old Louisville, Butchertown, The Highlands and Crescent Hill. The full list of areas is on our Louisville page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
How do we know what was done on each visit?
Every visit ends with an E-Report showing what was done, the water readings and photos, so managers have a record without having to be on site.
What should we do if the water looks wrong between visits?
Call your local team rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit. Cloudy water, a strong chemical smell or equipment noise are all worth reporting, and in a public pool it is always better to check early.
