One plan for the pool and the hot tub
A household with a pool and a spa should not need two companies. Our technicians handle both, indoors or outdoors, on one visit and one plan. The routine is the same each time: the water gets balanced, debris and filter grime come out, residue and stains are scrubbed off and the liner, covers and equipment get looked over as a matter of course. Because plans are tiered, you can pick a schedule that matches how much the family swims. A pool that has been left to go green or cloudy starts with a one time deep clean, then settles into the regular rhythm. You will see the results without being home, since each visit produces an E-Report listing the work, the readings and photos taken before and after.
Which code treats your pool as a pool
The answer changes at the Ohio River. In Kentucky, Section R326 of the Kentucky Residential Code covers pools, spas and hot tubs at one and two family homes and defines a private swimming pool as water more than 24 inches deep. That includes pools built below grade on site but not those assembled above grade, and Section R101.2 exempts pools built completely above grade. In Indiana, the 2020 Indiana Residential Code treats an in ground or on ground pool capable of holding water deeper than 42 inches as a residential pool, along with any indoor pool, and leaves enforcement to local governments. Knowing which side of those lines your pool falls on tells you which barrier and safety rules apply before you change anything around it.
Indoor pools and winter service
Nothing about home service has to stop in October; visits simply change pace with the weather, which keeps a pool protected through months when nobody swims. That matters most for indoor pools, which Indiana's code counts as residential pools in their own right, and for hot tubs that see more use as the weather turns. Winters here are cold enough to plan around. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give Louisville International a January average high of 43.6 F and low of 27.8 F, and Lexington's Bluegrass Airport a January high of 42.3 F. Outdoor pools are closed and winterized for those months. An indoor pool or a hot tub stays in use all the same and keeps needing balanced water, clean filters and an eye on the equipment. A year round plan simply changes the rhythm of visits with the season.
Filling from the tap: backflow and billing
Filling a pool is a plumbing connection as well as a water bill. Indiana's code, in Section R326.24.2, allows no direct connection between the drinking water supply and a pool unless it is protected against backflow or by an air gap, so keep the hose end above the water while you fill. Billing works differently from city to city. In Lexington, sewer fees follow Kentucky American Water meter readings, and customers can contract with the utility for a separate irrigation meter that is not subject to sewer fees. New Albany Municipal Utilities runs a sign up Summer Watering Program for residential customers covering use from June to September, with discounts based on each household's average consumption. Ask your own utility which arrangement suits a pool before a large fill.
Safety details that get overlooked at home
If a back door opens straight onto the pool area, the house wall becomes part of the barrier. Kentucky's code then asks for one of three things. The first is a powered safety cover meeting ASTM F1346. The second is a UL 2017 listed alarm that sounds when a door leading to the pool opens, and its silencing switch has to be mounted 54 inches or more above the threshold. The third is another approved measure, for example doors that close and latch by themselves. Across the river, Section R326.27.1 of Indiana's code requires handholds around the perimeter of a residential pool where the water is deeper than 3 feet 6 inches. A door alarm that has stopped sounding or a loose handhold is worth raising at your next visit. Your city or county building office can confirm which version of these rules covers your house.
Louisville Residential Pool Services: Frequently Asked Questions
What electrical rules apply to a pool in Jeffersonville?
Jeffersonville's Pool Safety Standards sheet from the Building Commission says pool power must come from a GFCI circuit, with extension cords not allowed. A pool cannot be placed beneath overhead lines or on top of buried ones, and any new permanent wiring requires an electrical permit. The sheet covers pools put in after April 25, 2011 with a possible depth over 42 inches, so check with the Building Commission before any electrical work.
What if my house wall is part of the pool barrier in Kentucky?
Then Section R326 of the Kentucky Residential Code asks for extra protection. You can fit a powered safety cover that meets ASTM F1346, put a UL 2017 listed alarm on every door that opens toward the pool or use another approved method such as self closing, self latching doors. With an alarm, the switch that turns it off has to be mounted no lower than 54 inches above the threshold. Your local building office can confirm what your property needs.
Which Louisville neighborhoods do you cover?
We look after pools across Louisville, including Downtown, NuLu (East Market District), Old Louisville, Butchertown, The Highlands and Crescent Hill. The full list of areas is on our Louisville page. If you do not see yours, get in touch and we will confirm.
Can service continue year round?
Yes. Service can run through the whole year, adjusted to the season, so the pool stays protected even when it is not being used much.
How do I choose the right service plan?
Service plans come in tiers, so the schedule and scope can match how you use your pool. Your local team will recommend a plan based on the pool, the equipment and how much attention it needs.
