Treating water is a good start, but it is also important to reduce the water level so it falls below jets and skimmers, and winterizing drain plugs. This step prevents water from seeping in and freezing. Frozen water makes plastic brittle and can lead to expansion. Frozen water expands up to 9%, which can cause warping or worse, burst pipes. A mesh pool cover might be great in summer but when it starts to get cold, these models can create the ideal space for algae to thrive. Winter covers are solid, which helps to protect your pool water from invasive growth. Blowing out plumbing lines can also help to prevent freezing and detachable components should be dried and stored to avoid damage.

Is Kanata tap water hard or soft for a pool?
The City of Ottawa says its central supply, treated from the Ottawa River, is about 30 mg/L total hardness (2.5 grains per gallon), which it calls very soft. The City's municipal well systems run much harder, from 200 mg/L at Carp to 350 mg/L at Kings Park and Shadow Ridge, so check which system serves your address before balancing calcium hardness. A maintenance visit tests the water you actually fill with.
Why does fresh fill water in Kanata test high for pH?
The 2024 Britannia plant annual report says the City of Ottawa adjusts the pH of treated central supply water to 9.2 to 9.4 to limit corrosion in its distribution system. A freshly filled or topped up pool or hot tub on that supply can start out with a high pH reading, so water is tested and balanced before swimmers go in.
Can I drain my pool into the storm sewer in Kanata?
No. The City of Ottawa's pool and hot tub discharge guidelines say chlorinated and salt water should never go to a storm sewer because storm sewers flow untreated to local creeks and rivers. At closing, water may go to a sanitary connection, onto your own property if it soaks in without affecting neighbours or to a licensed wastewater hauler. Confirm with the City before draining.
Can maintenance be scheduled around the season?
Yes, and most customers do. Service is usually heavier through the swimming season and lighter outside it, and some equipment work is better done when the pool is not in use. It is worth discussing the pattern rather than assuming one schedule fits the whole year.
Why does water chemistry matter for my equipment?
Unbalanced water does more than look bad. Water that drifts too low in alkalinity or pH becomes corrosive to metal parts, heaters and fittings, while water that runs high tends to leave scale. Keeping chemistry in range is one of the simplest ways to protect equipment.

Puddle Pools and our landscaper turned our backyard into a resort. We spent a few months interviewing pool builders before choosing Puddle Pools, and working with them to get to the finish line, it is clear we made the best choice. The very first consultation with Zach, I learnt lot more than all previous companies that I met. Clear explanation for the various options. Then we had an opportunity to see similar fiberglass pools that we were thinking of and the various colors. We started very late last fall, had the pool, landscaping, hot tub, and fence all done in a span of 6 weeks between end of September and early November before the first snowfall. The quality of work and communication has been outstanding. Zach and his team has been available through this summer teaching me pool maintenance, and visiting us several times to even show maintenance. Excellent work overall, and very fairly priced (the lowest) in comparison with others. Highest possible recommendation.
We hired Puddle Pool Services to clean and service our hot tub and they did an amazing job. We recently purchased a home in Orleans that came with a hot tub and we wanted to have it drained, cleaned, refilled, and treated. We don't know anything about hot tubs and Anthony (the service rep) was extremely friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. He performed the job according to our requirements and he took the extra time to answer all of our questions. I highly recommend Puddle Pool Services and would hire them again without hesitation.

Both Zach and Richard are always patient with us since we are first time pool owners. Doesn't matter if its an email or a phone call, they take the time to talk to us, give us their insights and offer assistance. Just this morning, i had an issue with my heating unit and Zach went above to get me to the right direction.
I really enjoyed working with Puddle Pool Services. Last year, they completely saved my pool during closing after I had already tried three different companies and spent thousands of dollars trying to fix issues. My pool was a disaster, and they were the only ones who truly helped. Because of that experience, there was no question that I would have them install my new heater. They also replaced my liner, cleaned the pool, and changed the sand. The team was amazing from start to finish — professional, efficient, and the entire job was completed in just one day. What stood out most was their communication and customer service. They kept me updated throughout the process and even checked in about whether the ice had melted. I never once felt left on my own. When I went to turn on the heater, unfortunately the HVAC company had not connected the electrical properly. I reached out on a Saturday, and within less than 30 minutes they responded. The very next day, they sent their electrician and fixed the issue immediately. The heater works incredibly well — my pool went from 60 degrees to 80 degrees in about six hours. I couldn’t be happier with the service and highly recommend Puddle Pool Services to anyone looking for reliable, knowledgeable, and responsive pool professionals.

I had a bad experience with Puddle Pools because of an error they made, and I posted about it. Upon seeing my review, the owner of the company looked into what had happened, reached out to me and was apologetic and accountable, and rectified the situation. It shows that he cares about his customers and how he runs his business. I won't hesitate to give them another chance moving forward.
Honestly I was surprised. They have fair prices, better than most, However, what I liked the most was that they weren’t trying to charge me for unnecessary costs (ie. flipping the Hot Tub). Also Dan was good good at getting right in and fixing the problem without wasting time. Which is a mother thing I appreciated especially for costs.
Reached out to puddle pool services for a pool cover. We had reached out to 5+ companies to come give us a quote but refused due to it being a kidney shaped pool, everyone wanted us to measure it, which given the same is extremely difficult. I was in the market to have a safety net installation. I requested quotation from big shops in Ottawa. Then I found puddle Pool Services online and gave them a chance. The quotations from the big shops were so sloppy and careless. A paragraph and then a huge price tag. Puddle Pool Services had the most professional quotation and most competitive price (significantly). At first I was a bit hesitant, I asked about services and material through email, and James replied with the most courteous and patient manner. They came on the date that they promised to measure, on the date that they promised to install. They have done very professional job. I certanly recommend them.
