Ancaster Pool Leak Detection

A swimming pool is a great addition to any property but only when they can hold water! If a pool is leaking, it will have a widespread impact across your property. This means the need for expensive repairs, replacements, higher utility bills and a whole lot of headaches for a property owners. If you suspect that you are losing water, call a Puddle Pro for Ancaster pool leak detection services to track and isolate problem areas before you are under water.

A bit of water loss here and there is natural. With swimmers getting in and out of your pool multiple times throughout the day, kids splashing, cannonballs and even high heats cause a drop in water levels. Part of pool maintenance is refilling swimming pools once water levels have dropped but there is a big difference between combatting evaporation and feeding a leak. If you are dealing with water leaks, the more you add to it, the higher the risk of damage and the longer your problem persists. If you suspect that your pool has sprung a leak, call a Puddle Pro at the first sign of a struggle.

Pool Leak Detection: Signs That You Have Sprung a Leak

Whether you have an above ground pool or an inground model, leaks are always public enemy #1! There is a variety of ways in which leaks can happen, some of which are caused by physical damage, aging construction materials and unexpected natural issues. If a poolside is showing cracks after a storm or there is a noticeable tear in a pool liner, it is easy to diagnose but root damage to underground pipes is much more difficult. In fact, it can take a long time to even realize that you are dealing with a leak but there are few things you can watch out for.

Swimming pools hold thousands of gallons of water, so even a tiny leak will have major consequences. This water will need to drain somewhere and unfortunately for property owners this is going to be your lawn, or even your basement. The longer that a leak is allowed to persist, the more damage it is doing, so quick identification and treatment are key to avoiding costly damage and expensive repairs.

Reduced Water Levels: The most obvious sign that you are dealing with a leak is a drop in your pool water level. In order to make sure that this is not caused by high traffic or evaporation from high heats, many pool owners choose to use the bucket test. The bucket test is a simple way to measure evaporation. A bucket of pool water is taken out and set next to the basin in the same conditions. After a few days, if the water level in the pool has dropped dramatically but the water in the bucket hasn’t you have a leak!

Increased Water Bills: If water is flowing out of your swimming pool when it isn’t supposed to, it will have a big impact on your water bills. If you begin to notice that water and utility bills are increasing for no apparent reason, your swimming pool might just be the culprit.

Leak Detection in Pools: Tracking Down Problem Areas

Once you have figured out that you are dealing with a leak, it is time to figure out where the leak is located. The majority of pool leaks are not visible to the naked eye, so that means having to put speciality pools to good use.

Dye Test: A dye test is the best option for identifying structural leaks. It is important to turn off the pool pump so water sits still. From here, different coloured dyes are chosen based on the type of pool that you are dealing with, as well as the colour of the vinyl liner, if there is one. Dyes are strategically placed and because they weigh more than pool water, will be drawn into the vacuum created by draining water.

Pressure Test: Pressure testing involves using a consistent flow of air applied to plumbing and return lines. This air will travel through pipes and plumbing and when it encounters a leak, will produce air bubbles. If the leak is underground, it will create gurgling in saturated soil. This can be heard from the surface or can be tracked down using speciality listening equipment. This is also a great way to identify whether you are dealing with corroded pipes or root damage.

Whether you have a plumbing leak or structural issue, our team of highly trained and experienced Puddle technicians will track it down! Our leak detection specialists are equipped with multiple testing options, as well as listening equipment and imagining equipment to spot problem areas and help to organize leak repairs accordingly.
